NoScript not running (no icon, no menu, no blocking js)

I had a similar problem which on the surface looked like the missing icon/right click menu entry described in https://forums.informaction.com/viewtopic.php?t=23388
It was actually even more serious, noscript was not running AT ALL (any page visited had javascript active, etc.). This also happened, as many describe there, after an update.
On top of that, I don't have 5.1.2 installed which seems to be the focus of that other forum thread.
On my system noscript is a globally installed extension, under the control of the main package manager. Said package manager reported version 5.1.1.
Surprisingly, firefox reported noscript 5.0.9 as being installed, BECAUSE that was the noscript version stored in the 'extensions.json' file in the profile directory.
What I did was to delete/rename the 'extensions.json' and restart firefox to let it regenerate that file by directly scanning available/installed extensions. That brought back noscript. (indeed, upon inspection, the new 'extensions.json' has 5.1.1 as the noscript version)
Hope this helps anyone that happens to have a similar problem.
