Big problem making online comments on CNN

Post by faster »

I like NoScript, but for me it has a huge problem.

CNN often has a "Sound Off" section added to some articles. EVERY time I comment, and click "submit," I get a message that says a script on the page has stopped running. If I click to continue the script, it often makes me do this dozens of times.

On some occasions, it will finally go through, but usually it takes many attempts. Sometimes hundreds - so I give up and cancel the script. Yet the page then thanks me for my submission, which I seriously doubt was made at all. This ONLY happens on CNN Sound Off sections and ONLY when I am submitting a comment. Never anywhere else. If I disable NoScript (and restart Firefox), my comments go through without a hitch.

Because I'm still using W98SE, my Firefox version is still "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.8.1.20) Gecko/20081217 Firefox/2.0.0.20"

But this was happening even before the most recent Firefox came out.

So NoScript is causing these, though it doesn't tell me so.

EVERYTHING on CNN pages is approved in NoScript, so that isn't the problem, either.

I'd like to think your next patch will address this issue.

My experience in the past has been that items being blocked by ABP tend to generate the error of a script is taking too long bluh bluh and/or fails or whatever. I am not saying its not a NS issue, but I have never faced this issue and when I have it has always been related to a ABP blockage than NS, hopefully that helps. Have you considered disabling both ABP and NS and turn them on one at a time and test to see when and how the problem occurs to see where the fault lies? This will definitely help the debugging process.

Yes, as I said, disabling NS stops the problem. If Ad Blocker is involved this is only so when NS is active. I didn't disable AdBlocker, and the scripts sailed through. NS is the crux, since I only have this problem when NS is enabled. And only on CNN's SoundOff commentary areas. Other kinds of comment pages or pages where you provide input, do not have this problem. I haven't tried leaving NS active and disabling Ad Blocker, though. It's enough to know that NS, when enabled, will ALWAYS give me this problem, and NEVER does when it is disabled.

I am sorry I wasn't more clear, yes I know you said that and I was simply stating that there might be a case of ABP blocking something that relies on a script that NS is blocking so by virtue of Murphy's law, problems converge to create your situation. If you can try disabling ABP and enabling NS and testing it, it would be very helpful. I know you can probably do this without my instructions but if I may ask you to humor me just in case. Do the following, even if it seem redundant and unnecessary.

1. Disable ABP and NS
2. Clear all cache and cookies
3. Close Fx
4. Restart and Enable NS
5. After restart try going and doing what you need

what happens? Thanks.

I want to thank therube for the link to the "generic" CNN SoundOff page. You may have noticed that, where an issue may be particularly controversial, they do not include SoundOff.

Of course, with this page, only CNN will get to read it, but at least it's something!

I've been trying to find a way to tell the American public, for instance, that fresh produce CAN be purified. All the online experts say is that "research is ongoing." That's false. I purify my produce constantly.

Trouble is, the drops I use aren't available in the U.S. They've been in common use here in Mexico, where I live retired. And they do precisely what they say, and are totally benign, even if you ingest them. No possible side effects.

If it were known to NGOs, they could provide these drops to people in Zimbabwe, to quell the cholera outbreak. It was colera in Mexico that inspired these drops originally - ther is virtually no cholera any more here. Shipping many tons of bottled drinking water is very expensive, but these drops are about the size of a nasal spray, and can purify water for a month of more for a good-sized family. They're cheap, too, about a buck a bottle.

But YOU can't have them, and I think it's time you started demanding the answers. If you had them, those salmonella and e-coli contaminated foods could have been purified - and EATEN. I feel certain those episodes were deliberate, too. Somebody doesn't want competition in the produce trade with Mexico.

Anyway, thanks, therube! You're a peach.
