Generic Host Process errors - recent frequent NoScrip update

Recently NoScripts has been installing updated versions almost daily. Suddenly I am getting Generic Host Process error messages that affect my system either immediately, if I choose to or not to send an error report to MS, and occur eventually within hours if I choose Debug.

Could there be a relationship between the NoScript updates and the errors?

Quite unlikely. NoScript is no binary program, it does not directly interact with your OS, drivers…

The error message you see has to do with svchost.exe (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314056, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svchost) a program to host other things and thus problems with this can have a lot of reasons. A quick search produced various potential fixes, one included deactivating NetBIOS support (which is a good idea anyway).

As a general advice, keep all your software (including your operating system!) up-to-date (tools like Secunia PSI might be helpful in that), remove software/components you don't use and try to have an understanding on what goes on on your machine (tools like Process Explorer and Autoruns might help you in that).

If you're getting daily updates, you might want to check whether you've accidentally switched from the regular releases to latest development build.

Thanks fro the answers.

Thawn, how / where do I set the updates between new releases and new builds?

Check the NoScript version number in the addon manager. If it's just three numbers, eg 2.4.8, then it's the stable release, but if it has 'rc' in it, it's a development release. To change, just install the one you want from http://noscript.net/getit/

Thanks to all. I've checked the version number, and it doesn't include an "rc", so I guess I'm OK. I've also made a note about doing a manual download to make sure I'm not getting something else.
