FG Options Advanced Tab

Hello. I installed FlashGot in Firefox 12.0 on a Windows OS. I am reading the online documentation about it 8-) and tinkering with the settings in order to get a good feel for how it works in different circumstances. For the most part it looks pretty straighforward, but I do have a question or two. On the Advanced tab of its Options dialogue, in the upper section there is an "edit box" (I think that is what it's called, but I'm not sure.) showing a path to Temporary Directory with a Browse button next to it. What all does FlashGot put into that directory and is there any reason I cannot change it, as it would appear possible to do using the button? Does everything put in this folder come only from FlashGot? I was a bit surprised to see files from Firefox showing up in that location because I run Firefox in a sandbox and I was expecting that any files created by Flashgot would also end up in the sandbox too. Depending on your answer about whether I can move it, I am inclined to create this folder inside the sandbox for Firefox.

In that same Advanced tab there is a check box for "Automatic download manager detection", which at the moment is checked. I have been using the default download manager for Firefox. Does this box need to remain checked still, even after the initial detection has been made? I mean, can I uncheck it without a loss of functionality?

In the bottom section of the Advanced tab, there are some controls for looking at a Log. The checkbox to disable the log is by default unchecked so that the log should be created, at least that is how mine appeared. However, when I click on the button for "Show Log...", nothing happens. Where is this log and why do you suppose mine does not appear to be working? :? Thanks.

You can change it and actually you should if FlashGot is unable to work because of file permissions on the default Firefox temporary directory (which is its default).

Files there may come from two distinct processes, Firefox.exe and FlashGot.exe. I suppose you sandboxed the former only, and I'm not sure whether spawned processes like the latter inherit the sandbox's constraints (even though it would make sense from a security perspective).

If you use the built-in download manager and you don't plan to install 3rd party ones any time soon, you can disable it (just remember to manually check if you're actually going to install a new DM).

The log is in your Firefox profile, which I suppose your sandbox settings allow Firefox to write in (otherwise many things in the browser couldn't work), so I'm not sure of why the log doesn't appear. Any error message in your Error Console (Ctrl+Shift+J) when you press the button?

After pressing the Show Log button and immediately going into the Error Console, I saw the following, but it did not mean anything to me because I do not understand it:

That stuff it's not related to FlashGot anyway.
Did you check whether running Firefox outside the sandbox lets the logs appear?

Yes, the same problem occurs whether I start Firefox in a sandbox or not. Clicking on the Log button has no affect.

Is the log file, flashgot.log, actually created & updated, but just not opening for you?

And if you disable all other extensions?

Or easier, if as a test you create a new, clean, Profile & then only install FlashGot?
And then if need be, disable all plugins?

Example (partial) log:

Code: Select all

*** FlashGot 1.3.0.3rc1 started at Sat, 09 Jul 2011 00:57:27 GMT ***
Per-session init started
Per-session init done in 4ms

Running C:\Mozilla\USERS\frog\FlashGot.exe -o C:\Local\frog\Temp\flashgot.frog\FlashGot.exe.test -- blocking
Native execution time 31
FlashGot Win Bridge 1.2.0.4

unexpected unknown error!

Hi jw72253,

I don't intend to intrude on your discussion with Giorgio and therube, but you should know that every Firefox profile is assigned a more-or-less random identifier, which AFAIK is globally unique. (at least until they get up to almost 3 trillion profiles, when they'll either have to reuse some or add another character)

The pattern is eight alphanumeric characters, as b5509ne3, for example, and your first install on a given machine always has the suffix "default".
So I changed yours to an obviously-manufactured ID, for your own privacy.

(Save a few keystrokes: "%appdata%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\" is always the default path on Win XP, and we can see your operating system and version, as does every other web site you visit, so just "... in my Profile folder" is good enough. :) )

Cheers.

Pretty sure it is supposed to be automatically truncated at some point. But there is another thread about where it is not happening for some, myself included ;-).

Mine stands at 1 MB, starting back in July 2011, & running through today.

Code: Select all

grep -i -c "*** flashgot" flashgot.log

Hello, Tom. Thanks for the information. Help me understand how changing my profile's identifier would help me with maintaining privacy? I mean, in general what would I gain in changing it to something random? It seems to me that the profile identifier is not visible to others in any way, and changing it would not change that condition. :?:

If I wanted to spoof my user agent, I could do so. At this juncture, I have no compelling reason to do so, and this is only one of the browsers available for my use and only one of the OS. Thank you. ;)

Cheers.[/quote]

Does anything in the output of my log indicate a reason for why the "Show Log" button does not behave as it should? That it does not function properly is not a major problem for me because I can still get to it easily enough, but I am curious now. Also, there are a lot of effor messages in the log, and I am wondering whether their occurence is normal for others too or they indicate a problem in my configuration somehow? I can't imagine what would cause such a thing since I believe I used a standard installation with the defaults for the most part. Any ideas? :?

I don't personally know of a targeted exploit, or of a way for sites to obtain your profile # ("sniffing" can discover a lot of things, though NoScript probably would prevent most methods), or whether there is a database somewhere of which profile IDs were installed on which OS and version, which version of Fx, from which IP addresses, etc. (Search the web for "browser fingerprinting".) But being ultra-cautious (read, "paranoid" or "tinfoil hat" Image ;)) , I'd *personally* rather not post publicly anything that ties me uniquely to a certain browser profile. Just a thought. IMHO. YMMV.

As a guest, I don't think you can edit your posts, so if you want me to put the original back, just post it, and I will.

I didn't say that it was a bad thing. The page has to know how to send code in the correct format. You might break pages by changing the OS in your UA.
I mentioned it only because we're on the same OS, so I knew the file path to the profile folder. They're slightly different in newer Windows, but in general, just trying to say that you don't need to type the full path to your profile, just say, "In my profile folder, I see x, y, and z.... "

The Useragent Switcher add-on didn't seem to mention changing OSs, and I'm not aware of any method to do so. It could certainly get in the way of troubleshooting if you're on one system, but your UA reads as another.

I too use several browsers, change IP addresses occasionally, etc. Sorry that the information was misread as a warning or something.
I guess it took more keystrokes to explain that than you would have used by typing the full path every time.

Cheers.

You are making a good point about not wanting to get tied me to a particular profile, and I couldn't agee more. :) I asked mostly because I was curious whether there was something you were aware of like that, which I may not have been. We are 100% in agreement on this issue.

No, please keep it as you did. If you would, also change the same profile showing on line 1571 of that same post. Let's just scrub it all, and I will try to be more careful. Thanks for that advice.

No problem here as well. My bad! I mentioned it out of habit, not because I didn't think you would need it. Anybody who can develop and support an excellent and thorough program like NoScript sure knows where to find my profile of all things!" :ugeek:

I was not meaning to imply or suggest that I was on the defense about what you said. Sorry if I came across like that. Sure did not mean to. Like you, I too sometimes were a tinfoil hat, and my precaution may have seized my brain in this case. We are all good by me, my friend. Thanks for your courtesy and professionalism.

My bad. I caught it in the second appearance in that line, but not the first. I should have searched the page for it, but the others were easy and obvious. That line was complex.... anyway, done.

Quick tips on quotes, if interested: If you want to quote another user in your reply, click the "quote" button on the other person's post instead of "Reply".
To quote separate individual portions of a post, select/highlight those portions, then click "Quote" from the toolbar at the top of the Compose box.
You can delete non-pertinent portions of their post, and intersperse your replies with each of their points.

Caution: When editing a post in that manner, ensure that all quoted sections start and end with quote tags:

Code: Select all

[quote] blah blah [/quote]
(I wrapped that in "Code" tags, so that the Quote tags would not actually be parsed as a quotation: showing the raw form.)

You can keep the other user's identity by copy/paste their first quote in your post, e. g.

Code: Select all

[quote="jw72253"]
... again ensuring to use a close-quote tag at the end.

Code: Select all

[quote="jw72253"]yada yada[/quote]
You can "nest" up to three generations of quotes, e. g. Tom post #1, your reply, Tom reply to that. Just make sure that each person's quoted portion ends with a close-quote, which means that the total number of close-quotes should equal the total number of "quote" at the beginning -- regardless of whether names are included.
One picture is worth a thousand words:

Code: Select all

[quote="jw72253"][quote="Tom T."][quote="jw72253"]Hello.[/quote]

Note the nested boxes, the indentations, and the color changes.
I admit, this can get a bit confusing at times. Maybe try only two back-and-forths, just to start. ;)
