I recently noticed a phenomenon that appears to be related to one of the latest NOSCRIPT updates.

As you know, some websites use drop-down (combo) boxes, which expand when clicked and show several options to choose from; (For example a list of Cities or States.)

I have discovered that the drop-down (and some link functionality) does not work on some sites when NoScript is enabled. You can 'see' the drop-down box and perhaps the first entry, but nothing happens when you click the arrow. Also, some of the (URL) links on the pages are also affected / do not work.

It would not allow me to enter the visual confirmation code or press the 'Try another challenge' link or press the "I'm Human" button.

I can consistently re-create the error on some sites, but unfortunately the problem does not exist on every site (so it may have something to do with how the various pages are written)


For example: the drop-down (combo) box on the UPS.com website works fine with NoScript enabled

FYI - I have NoScript v2.3.9 and am still using Firefox v3.5 (I hate the newer versions)

Drop-down boxes (which are BTW not the same thing as combo boxes which allow you to enter your own text, thus are combinations of text boxes and drop-down lists) work fine for me on https://www.saint-gobain.apply2jobs.com ... hInterface (which is just the site the page is embedding).

The site uses cascading scripts: After (temp)-allowing the main site, one must (temp-) allow apply2jobs.com.
This worked in both Firefox 12, and (to simulate older, non-HTML5-compliant browsers), Fx 2.0.0.20.

I even received a warning stating that "The site will not work until Javascript is enabled" -- and that was after the main site was allowed.
Did you allow cookies, which are almost always a requirement when specific choices are to be carried throughout the session.

There is a known phpBB issue with long links being truncated, while short ones: www.example.com work fine.
Yes, the workaround is to use URL tags. It's PHP, not this forum, and is a known issue. Don't know if they intend to fix it.

Visual confirmation codes often require allowing additional script, such as api.recaptcha.net, or other providers of CAPTCHAs.
Some of these may use Flash video or <IFRAME>, which must be temp-allowed.

I share your feelings about F4+ (but use F12 anyway). Would you at least consider the last of the F3 branch, which is Fx 3.6.28? -- understanding the risks of using unsupported software.

- You're obviously right about the two types of boxes (combo v/s drop-down), I didn't mean to confuse the two. I'm aware of the difference & was just in a hurry to post the message and meant to say that the problem exists with a variety of controls which included drop-down & combo boxes etc.

- Like you, I am also able to access the objects when I pull up (only) the embedded page. So the problem only exists when its embedded within the parent page.

- I was already aware of having to (temporarily) allow some of the elements (i.e. apply2Jobs.com). I have also seen the "The site will not work until JavaScript is enabled" message but knew to 'allow' the elements, which always resolved the problem. (This hasn't ever been an issue for me).

On some sites (specifically those that I trust) I actually (temporarily) "allow 'all' this page". But even with 'all' elements allowed (i.e. nothing being blocked on the page) the problem still exists for me.

Cookies have never been an issue for me on this site (I go to these sites often) and I only started seeing this problem since I allowed NoScript to update a few days ago.
(So although I don't think Cookies are the issue, I will check to see if something changed - just to be sure).


Unless there was a change in Firefox (which there shouldn't be - as I have all updates disabled), I still believe that the issue with the combo/list boxes is inherent in the latest update of NoScript because as mention, the problem was not apparent before the latest update.

I have also discovered a new problem that is probably related.

I have found that 'some' embedded videos (specifically those which are on forum pages) will not play. The video player shows the video screen along with an image from the video and the "PLAY" arrow (the button in the center of the video). However, the video will not play when the button is pressed.

I can pull the video up in YouTube and on other websites and the videos play fine. So it appears to be related to just the embedded object)

I may have access to another PC with a newer version of Firefox (v12), which may still have the previous version of NoScript - so I will see if the problem exists there and then update NoScript to see if it follows.

Looks like the first time through the search works, all fields able to be filled, down through State.
Search then searches.

If you then back-arrow, some of the fields are pre-filled; Company, Ref, Function, & Country.
State & City are set to be selected again - but do not work at that point.
A page refresh does not change the situation.

What you have to do is to reselect (& change) the Country (like from US to CA & then back again), at which time State & City are again selectable.

Error Console shows: So I would guess that part of the issue is a page coding problem?

Otherwise FF 3.5.19 & NoScript 2.4rc6 look to be working as expected.


With NoScript disabled, I'm not seeing any difference, except that if you back-arrow, none of the selections are pre-filled (though I could have sworn that on my first attempt, they were?).

Please post exact URLs, your settings in NoScript, especially Embeddings tab, and could you please open Firefox Error Console (Ctrl+Shift+J), click "Errors", and copy any red Error messages and paste them here? Also please click "Messages", and post here any messages relating to NoScript. .
If we can reproduce the error, it's a lot easier to fix it.

Here is another user who had problems which he believed to be related to using older Firefox versions.

I don't mean to be sarcastic at all, but then why did I not get the same error, even in Fx 2?
Consider using 3.6.28 if you can't stand the new look. Still some risk, of course.

How are we to diagnose that without a particular link?

I can say one thing, though: The standard Web language, HTML, was updated to a new version, HTML5. Only Firefox 4+ support this.
Many YouTube videos have a "graceful fallback": if they detect that HTML5 isn't supported, they use the older methods. Gradually, they will convert all of their Flash videos to HTML5, not using Flash.

This may be the problem at some sites: They may host HTML5 videos regardless of browser. Only solution: have a new browser.
(You can put the new one on a USB flash drive if you don't want to install it on your hard drive alongside the older one. Try PortableApps.com.)
