[UNRELATED] NoScript and Tumblr not getting along

Post by RESphenantic »

I use Firefox 3.6.25 (older computer) and this morning I got myself the latest update of NoScript when I started up Firefox. All of a sudden, nothing hosted on Tumblr that uses Flash player (as opposed to embedded things like YouTube videos, which play just fine) even appears. I get the same message from Tumblr that I'd get from an untrusted site (text telling me that I need to enable or install a certain version of Flash player) and Tumblr is on my Whitelist. Tumblr's audio and video players both run on Flash, so I can't even see that part of those posts. I have Flash 11 installed, yet it tells me I need 9 or 10 to see those things. Those versions of Flash don't install if you have a newer version. I know the problem is not with Flash since this was all working just fine yesterday and Flash hasn't updated in a very long time. I'm inclined to believe that the latest update of NoScript is to blame.

If NoScript is the cause of the problem, is there a way for me to change back to the previous level of update? Has this happened to any other Tumblr users who have NoScript installed? I would really like to get back to using my Tumblr blog properly as soon as possible and keep this from happening on other sites that have Flash functions in the future.

No need to apologize. I have an older computer, but prefer 3.6.x just because it's easier, cleaner, and neater than the latest. :P

I can't see anything like that. Is it necessary to log in first, or can you point me to a URL in there where the issue can be reproduced without login?

If not, bugmenot.com may have a usable login for further testing.

I'll bet they would if you uninstalled the current version completely -- meaning after using Windows Add/Remove Programs (from Control Panel), go through and manually delete the inevitable scraps, from

"C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed"
"C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Macromedia"

of course substituting the actual username on the computer, and also your main (Windows) drive letter, if not C:.

Note: You will have to enable "Show hidden files and folders" in My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View. (Might be slightly different path, depending on whether you use Classic theme, XP theme, etc.) ... and before opening any system folders at all, *OF COURSE* back up *Everything" - pix, flix, dox, programs -- create a Restore Point and/or a full-disk-image backup, if you have the means to do the latter. Then, if it doesn't install properly, you can at least get back to where you were before.

Maybe, but don't bet the family farm on that just yet... could also be the site itself, giving out these bogus warnings. Much easier to know if someone here can reproduce the issue and see for ourselves.

Cant' think of any changes that would do that, but feel free to check the changelog to see if anything looks like it would affect it.

Uninstall NS and go to NoScript version history for the version you want. Be aware that this involves some security risk, as recent updates protect against new Web threats, as detailed in said changelog.

First report I've seen, but if others have the issue, please do post, with more details (exact URL, etc.)

Thank you for such a quick response. Well, upon further investigation, it turns out that logging in IS a requirement to see this weird problem in action. Tumblr video and audio both work perfectly well on actual blog pages, but neither works at all on my Tumblr dashboard (for the non-users, the place where all the posts from the blogs we keep track of appear for us to see all at once). I'm now inclined to believe that the problem might not be with NoScript or Flash, but might actually be with Tumblr itself. I've sent them an email requesting help.

Thanks again. I'll just slap something into the title of this thread to show that NoScript isn't involved.

No problem. Our customary term would be "Unrelated" (to NoScript), while "Resolved" is an actual NS issue that was fixed, either by user making config changes, etc., or perhaps a fix in next NS release. Not picking nits, just making sure no offense taken that I've edited your edited title. :)

If you do confirm the source of the issue, please post back, so that if anyone else asks the same question here, we'll already know the answer.
And of course, if it again appears to be NS-related, we'll get to work on that.

Thank you for the additional info.

Oh, thank you for that, too. I'm new to this forum. The only other NoScript issue I ever had was the Yahoo Toolbar incident last year and that got cleared up.
