Import whitelist and preferences from bookmark

Post by jan »

Hi,
so as it happened to some here my synced preferences were lost with the change from sync through bookmark to the firefoxsync integration. That was annoying but all is not lost, because I still have the bookmark.
There is no option to import the bookmark, so before I copy/paste myself a whitelist import file I wanted to ask if there is a more elegant way. Maybe one where I can also import the preferences and blacklist?

Sorry that this went unanswered for a week. Will flag for Giorgio's attention. Thanks for the bump.

Thx! :)
I tinkered a bit, but found no further clues on how to do this. I especially don't want to loose my blacklist...

Hi,
I got this weird NoScript+Xmarks behavior on fresh installation of Portable FF - there's no option for "Backup NoScript configuration in a bookmark":
Image

Is this feature deprecated or did I miss something?

Yes.

No, I'm missing something -- my brain.
FAQ 2.4:
If you want to backup your whole NoScript configuration and permissions, you can use the Export and Import buttons at the bottom of the Options dialog.
Changelog:
v 1.9.2.91
==========================================================================
+ Import and Export buttons in NoScript Options to backup and restore
the whole NoScript configuration (preferences and permissions) to
and from a text file.
So, if you can just convert the information in your present backup to text format, you can import it all with the import/importuj button, and also export/eksportuj it all to a text file in the future.
There's probably an easy way to do that conversion, but I'm going to go bang my head against the wall for a while. Bumped the post while barely reading the contents. A thousand apologies.

and what about the missing option for "Backup NoScript configuration in a bookmark"? Could you tell why it's missing in NoScript's Options on General tab?

What version of NoScript are you using? I'm looking at 2.1.7 (latest stable release) General tab right now, and

"Backup NoScript configuration in a bookmark for easy synchronization" is the third entry of the four at the bottom, right above "Scripts Globally Allowed (dangerous)".

This setting is not available on Firefox versions newer than 3.6, you have Firefox Sync there instead.

My thread got kind of hijacked there
I know that Firefox Sync replaces the bookmark synchronisation. I know that I can import/export the preferences.
What I wanted to know is if there is an elegant way to import from my bookmark, because Firefoxsync has overwritten my preferences.
I have managed to find the whitelist in the bookmark, but I am not shure how blacklist and preferences are saved there.
Also I'm not comfortable copy/pasting this to an selfmade import file. But I guess I will have to do just that. :?

The screenshot posted above is from the same version of 2.1.7 (there are 3 options. There used to be 4 in bygone days). There's no option for keeping the configuration as a bookmark. I'm using polish locale as you can see. Maybe it concerns only Polish users? I did some troubleshooting by installing Firefox on fresh installation of Windows 7, installing the newest version of NoScript and the same thing happens.
Should I report a bug?

In fact, the option has been removed in Firefox 4 because of deep and incompatible changes in the internal Firefox bookmarking infrastructure.

@ Olo:: Even before Giorgio replied with the explanation, please note that long-time forum contributor dhouwn noted the second thing that I missed in my sleep-deprived, brain-dead state (time for a break, maybe :? ): that I'm still on Fx 3.6 out of personal preference, but starting in F4, FirefoxSync replaced this feature.

@ jan: Yes, sorry, it did get kind of hijacked.
I don't use the bookmark feature. I'll ask Giorgio to post here if there's any way to extract all of the data from it.

In the meantime, if you still have one machine that is configured the way you like it, you can use this legacy method of synchronizing either the entire profile or just your NoScript settings. There is a step-by-step guide for novice users, and a shortened version for experienced users.

Else you can just build up the Untrusted list as you experience those scripts trying to load. Surely you can remember your configuration settings in each tab of NS Options, too? (Embeddings is easy for me -- I check them all, for maximum safety. ;) ) HTTPS sites can be gleaned from your actual bookmarks or as you use them. Just some thoughts to help.
