Button icons missing in public forum...

Post by Shingoshi »

There's a local news station (KATU) that offers the public to participate in debates and discussion about articles that have been posted. While pages are reloading, I've noticed there actually are button/icons that are replaced by links when the page is finished loading. I'm pretty certain this is a javascript issue. But I can't seem to find which of the many sites listed by NoScript is responsible for presenting those icons. And I'm pretty certain that's why the pages are never properly rendered either. Here's a link to one of the pages in question.

Looks like you need to Allow both katu.com & intensedebate.com, with intensedebate.com being the one that shows the Comments (x) Post a comment section.

Further, in NoScript Options | -> Plugins, Forbid <IFRAME> needs to be unchecked.

Shingoshi, good to see you, haven't talked in the NNL thread for a while. How have you been?

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I checked the link and not seeing the issue you are having, sorry.

Hi, Shingoshi. The whole page and the buttons in the Comments section seem to display correctly if I Allow the default whitelisted sites, googlesyndication.com, google.com, and about:blank, plus katu.com and intensedebate.com. I usually allow googleapis.com too, but it doesn't seem to be necessary here. The rest of the scripts appear to just serve advertisements.

Hope this helps. Please let us know whether it does.

Both of those sites are allowed. If they weren't, I wouldn't be able to post (as ShingoshiDao) either. I also DON'T have "Forbid <iFrame>" checked. I even unchecked ClearClick for trusted pages, and that doesn't work either. I would really like to have the icons visible.

I know this may sound cliche but have you tried the standard diagnostics (clean profile, enable/disable ns) to see if anything is possibly conflicting with it on your machine that we don't have on ours? Also maybe backup your NS list and then reset it and try. I am sure you have done some of this if not all, you are good but just wondering out loud if something got missed. If you have ABP installed, is a rouge filter grabbing it?

Unfortunately, I must disappoint you! I didn't do what you assumed. I was too lazy! But then, I really didn't think about backing up my whitelist and deleting it. Ok, I now see that I could have exported the list, and saved it somewhere. Did I mention earlier that I'm lazy?

Sorry buddy, I did mention about backing up your list but hell we all lose them here and there, no biggie to rebuild it for a pro like yourself. You are not lazy, I respect you and have known you for a while now, so we good. Did it fix the problem by the way or still trying it out? Let me know, I am now itching to figure out what's up.

In accordance with my abundant laziness, I've decided to live with it. You know, the path of least resistance.

But seriously. Having 74 installed extensions, kind of disincentivises one to experiment with having to start with a blank slate, so to speak. Having to start from that position and one by one reload each extension, is a nightmare I'd rather not have.

Whatever works right? :D
Wow, that's alot of extensions, with that many of them, any one of them could throw a monkey wrench in the mix. How about eliminating NS as the problem which is relatively simple. Start a new profile, leaving your other one as is, install the latest NS and restart into that profile and see if the problem persists on that page. If yes, then is an NS issue, if not then at least we know its not NS causing it.
Then you can just delete the new profile and go back to using the old one. :P

Yeah! That would be the simplest way to go about it. But really, you know as well as I do, NoScript isn't the one likely causing this. So I would be back to individually loading extensions, just to find which one is causing this. For the time being, I can live without icons on my buttons.

I know but in the interest of being thorough and non-presumptuous we like to eliminate all possibilities
Anyway, its up to you and as long as it doesn't bother you, then we are happy and for the record, I do operate generally on the presumption that NS is NOT the problem, but will always work diligently to make sure. Let us know if something else comes up and we'll hack at it until we figure it out.

Without any explanation whatsoever, I now have the icons and buttons that were missing before. And I don't think I've done anything that would have changed it. So I lucked out. But I'm having other issues which I don't think apply to this. But if I have reason to think so later, I'll mention exactly what's happening.

Edit: Ok. So here's something that may be relevant. I can't login now. I haven't been able to for a while. If I go the site (intensedebate.com) that manages the blogs, it will show me as logged in. When I go back to the KATU News site, it may show me as logged in also. But then there's also a login button present at the same time. So when I go to post, it tells me my session has expired. And I just got to the page in question. So the end result is that I can't post.

Disregard my last post. The situation has returned to be as it was before. Now that I'm able to post, I have no buttons again. I'm not even going to bother trying to figure this out.

Seems a bit too hinky to come and go like this. Makes no sense :?
