I cant clear the download list without closing the browser. I click on downloads, clear list. But when I add downloads, the old ones are still there and they begin to download, too. How do I clear the list completely?

Are you using Firefox's built-in download manager?
If you are, maybe it's a bug in it.
You may want to try an external download manager among those supported by FlashGot (Free Download Manager is free, open source and feature-packed): they do a much better job at housekeeping downloads.
