Scripts blocked from running

Post by Cheech »

On a site that I accessed a number of times in the recent past all of a sudden the scripts have stopped working. The site is in the white list and there is no indications that any are disabled. I've verified the site by accessing it using IE and everything works fine. I also disabled NoScript and accessed the site using Firefox and the site works correctly.

Unfortunately the site is a financial site that restricts access to only account holders so I can not provide a link to the site that would be usable to others. I would appreciate some assistance in providing and gathering whatever information that would be useful in determining what the problem might be.

NoScript version is 1.9.1.6, Firefox 3.0.8, Windows XP/SP3.

Thank you

Does this site happen to be written in ASP.net? (aspx) pages using post back?
The reason I ask is that I have this problem too and I posted a question for it and haven't heard on it and if related, we can combine the topics to make sure we get collaborative response.

If not, and you cannot provide an example link for us to test, can you give us the main site that we can use and if we have accounts there, we might be able to use our own accounts to test it.

Here's the link to the main page:

http://www.contrarianportfolio.com/

I viewed the source for the page where I was having the problem and the HTML does have .Asp references, however this time it is now working. I did restart FF after disabling and re-enabling NoScript. Not sure if that made any difference. I logged on and off the site several times and was not able to reproduce the problem. I don't know if the .asp routines are using any post backs.

I can send the HTML in a file but I'm not sure if I can attach files in this website. If not I'll post it directly.

This seems to be a traditional ASP so it shouldn't have any issues. So this was probably a fluke for you. Glad its working.

Well it's back again so apparently it's no a fluke. I hadn't been on the site since the last post. The symptoms are exactly the same. Once I logon on to the site most of the links (but not all) to other pages do not work. If I go to a page via a working link the symptom is the same, some of the links work and others do not. When I disabled NoScript and the links worked and that's without getting off and back on the site. I didn't even refresh the page. When I re-enabled NoScript the links stopped working again.

Are the links that do not work in the contrarianportfolio.com domain?
If you Allow Scripts Globally (& then perhaps refresh the page, depending upon your settings), do the links work?

Yes, the scripts that are not running are in the contrarian... domain. I did try refreshing the page after re-enabling NoScript and the scripts did not work, however I did not have to refresh the page to get the scripts to work after disabling NoScript. I'm not sure what you are asking me, but I did state in my initial post that the links do work when I disable NoScript. The only thing I did was to disable NoScript and did not even refresh the page and the links worked. Then I re-enabled NoScript and the links stopped working again. I even refreshed the page and the links still did not work. Other then the refresh I never left the page where the links were. At this point it appears that NoScript is preventing the links from working.

Two things are strange, the links on the top of the page which are menu items work while the links that are on the right side of the page which are also menu items (but to different things) do not work. Also, during this reply I again went to the site and this time all the links are working. This was the first time today that I was on the site.

If I recall when it doesn't work it's usually when I get on to the site after the first time, not that may have anything to do with the situation as I have to logon each time. I'll take better note of this when it fails again, as I'm pretty sure it will.

Just out of curiosity, are you still using NS version 1.9.1.6 as in the first post, or have you gotten all updates? There have been a number of improvements and bug fixes since then. Latest stable version is 1.9.1.91. If you don't have it, trying the latest version could help.

Mozilla add-ons secure NoScript download is here.

Particular (NoScripts) settings set, may have an affect on how pages react. (Kind of a DUH comment, but anyhow...). Settings such as I mentioned here, http://forums.informaction.com/viewtopi ... 2403#p2403. So what you are seeing happen may have a similar cause.

Concerning the release level of NoScript, my Firefox is setup to automatically download updates to my addons but to manually install them, which I always do. I don't know what release level I was at when I reported the latest incident but I'm certain it was current as of that date. Right now I'm on NS 1.9.2. I've haven't experienced the problem since this latest update but I've only been on the site once. But even before this latest update it didn't fail consistently so at this time I have no way of stating whether the problem has been resolved or not.

It's not clear to me after reading the referenced post what setting I was supposed to be checking so I'd appreciate it if you would be more specific. I did see references to the white list level and the white list for this site is set to at the root level.

Thanks

@Cheech, I was just pointing out that any settings that are enabled or disabled may have an affect on how a page responds (or not). And that as some will run with different settings, what I see with my settings may not be what you see with your settings. So sometimes one might need to relax or heighten settings to see what someone else sees. So what one may view as a "problem" may not actually be so any longer once settings are changed to Allow/Forbid something that was previously blocked/unblocked.

Hi
I've been having the same problem with Hotmail and YouTube. Both of which are in my White List, and up until last night, I wasn't having any problem with either of them. Now when I'm in Firefox, I can't view You Tube, and I can't open my emails in Hotmail. I tried in IE, and success with both.
I manually updated No Scripts this morning.
Thanks

I just went to YouTube, and everything is fine.
For all of those still having problems, please try Standard Diagnostic and let us know the results. Thanks.

Hi
I ran through the Standard diagnostic - Firefox stuff. The initial steps didn't work, but I opened up in Firefox Safe Mode, where everything worked as normal. Then when I restarted Firefox, it all worked. I don't know what actually happened - but thanks for your help.
