Hi Giorgio

I realised a few days ago that the NoScript icon at lower right screen had disappeared from my netbook. I read the earlier posts on this same topic but have not been able to fix the problem.

The original problem may have been caused by the HP program listed in the earlier postings, which I deleted. When that didn't work I deleted all the rest of the HP printer programs which had been loaded at the same time: that didn't work either. I checked for the Microsoft.NET Framework Assistant problem but my machine does not appear to have this particular program loaded. I don't have any of the other 'known problem' programs loaded. I tried the systems diagnostics recommended in earlier posts to no avail. Tried the 'customise' procedure on repeated occasions throughout the attempts to fix the problem, but there has never been a NoScript icon available to add to any toolbar. I have now done a clean new install of the latest version of Firefox, including cleaning the profile and not importing any settings from ealier versions or from Internet Explorer, but on adding NoScript the problem is still there - no icon on the toolbar, no icon in 'customise'.

On the latest load of Firefox I found that I had the extensions AVG Safe Search and Java Quick Start already loaded from existing programs on the netbook. Added NoScript next - no icon. Disabling the AVG and Java extensions makes no difference.

I have virtually the same set-up on my main PC and do not have the same problem. The machines have been kept in step with upgrades and patches and use the same Firefox extensions. Main differences between the machines are:

PC - XP Pro, uses standard theme, never had the HP software loaded

Netbook - XP Home, uses Littlefox theme, had the HP software loaded (for a printer at work)

Any suggestions on how to investigate further?

Java quickstart is not a known conflict or misbehaviour problem.
LittleFox is a good Foxizen.

It's getting installed globally via the registry, so use the recommended uninstall routine from AVG - linked to on the reference to AVG on the mozillazine problem extensions page - to *ahem* eliminate it from your enquiries. Sorry not going to try to put all the links in because the hand of Rambo would smite me.

thanks for your suggestion - I had missed the AVG comments when I looked at the page in question.

However, bad news - as you suggested, I uninstalled AVG Free v9.0 and re-installed without the LinkScanner enabled. The AVG extension in Firefox has gone, but the problem has not... Still no icon on the toolbar, and no icon available in 'customise'.

I'm still puzzled as to why my main PC does not show this problem, but the netbook does, with almost identical set-ups. The key difference seems to be the installation of the HP software which enables the netbook to use a printer I don't need to use from the Main PC. This particular program was listed on a previous similar thread as being a knwn problem, although it's not listed in the linked table.

My guess is that the offending HP program, although uninstalled from my netwbook, has left a trace of itself in an area to which Firefox seems to be sensitive. I haven't got a clue where to start looking...

Rebooted after the uninstall of AVG?
Then maybe seek help from HP about what registry items may be lingering after an uninstall of their software?
Did the HP problem you found in these forums have a solution?
Did you try that?
There could be other than HP as the diff because XP Home has a fair amount of differences to XP Pro wrt admin and networking.
That's me empty of ideas, afraid.

I've been rebooting after every uninstall/re-install.

I went through the Registry and deleted all the references to HP (and there were many, despite the uninstall I did earlier!) Made no difference.

I uninstalled Firefox and re-installed it 'clean'. Re-installed NoScript - still no toolbar.

I've run out of ideas too... I'll try contacting HP.

What does "clean" mean here? Did you use a clean profile? Did you check there was no automatically installed extension other than NoScript in your add-ons manager?

'Clean' in this context did include cleaning the profile as per your advice in a previous similar thread.

The only automatically installed extension is Java Quick Starter. Disabling this makes no difference. I guess the only way to get rid of this as an auto-install is to remove Java from the netbook?

At the moment I can cope with most of the limitations on practical use caused by the absence of the toolbar by use of the whitelist. Ironically, I have to disable NoScript to be able to post to this forum. Typing "forums.informaction.co" into the whitelist: when the missing "m" is added to the end, the 'allow' button is made inactive.

It shouldn't, indeed: if it did, I would be overflowed by reports like yours and couldn't use NoScript myself...

This usually means you've got a parent domain already in the whitelist (e.g. "informaction.com"), making the new entry redundant.

No need to remove Java. Remove the Java Quick Starter through the Java Control Panel:
Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous
Uncheck Java Quick Starter

This will remove it from the Firefox extensions. At least it did for me. An additional benefit is that it prevents its process, jqs.exe, from automatically starting with Windows. By the way, every Java install or update renables that option. I need to uncheck that box after every Java update.

Alan, thanks for the tip about switching off the Java Quick Starter. Giorgio, I did have the parent domain in the whitelist already.

I have another laptop with almost identical set-up. I don't use it often and so I don't keep it bang up to date every day. I noticed that I did not have the missing toolbar problem and was still on an earlier version of NoScript. I tried removing the latest version of NoScript from the netbook and re-installing the same earlier version - made no difference. So I updated the netbook back to the latest version of NoScript. Now I'm finding that on some - but not all - loads of Firefox the toolbar has come back. It does not come back predictably (eg. if the toolbar is missing, then rebooting the netbook may or may not restore it).

I'm still puzzled! Never mind, I have a nearly working system and can live within the limitations... Thanks to all for comments and help!

Further to my previous post, after a few days of trials it appears that the NoScript toolbar is only activated on the first load of Firefox after a lengthy period when the netbook is shut down (eg. overnight). If Firefox is then closed and re-opened the NoScript toolbar is not present, even if the computer is shut down and re-started.

Why would the length of time for which the computer is shut down make a difference to NoScript's behaviour?

Just having a random idea: How about instaling NoScript globally? That means downloading the .xpi-file and copying into the extension folder in the Firefox directory ("%ProgramFiles%\Mozilla Firefox\extensions").
