Download negative numbers

Hi,
I am trying to download URLs containing negative numbers.
http://www.example.com/[-27-43].jpg doesn't work. Nor does
http://www.example.com/[(-27)-43].jpg
So I need a function. But I can't quite figure out how to name variables and use them inside the function. Basically I want a function which subtracts, say, 50, from the argument. So I ask it to do 0-100 and it returns -50 to +50.

Just put the "negative" in as a literal character.
So something like...
