install problem Malformed .rdf file

Using Firefox 3.6 on Mac OSX 10.4.11 I'm getting this error whenever I try to install NoScript 1.9.9.39

Firefox could not install this item because "install-gbw..rdf" (provided by the item) is not well-formed or does not exist. Please contact the author about this problem.

Any idea why? I like NoScript and want very much to get the latest version going.

Some additional info on the problem. I'm using an NFS mounted home directory. It appears as though the NoScript installer is creating a temporary file called install-XXX..rdf where XXX varies with each version or installation attempt. I suspect that the temp file is being put on the NFS drive and that there is some problem in accessing it there.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Nobody appears to be reporting any problems with NS install packages right now, so your questions about your particular error would be better followed up with your network admin or vendor of whichever application creates a NFS home directory for your system - you didn't set an NFS from scratch yourself did you?
NFS for home computing goes with emulation setups in my limited experience. Are you running a virtual box? You may want to see the vendor's forums for your particular application in any case :-)

Looks like an Add-Ons Manager corruption.
Could you try to follow the steps outlined in this article?

Giorgio,

Thank you for your help. I've tried the applicable solutions from the link that you provided, including ensuring that javascript was active, deleting extensions files, and installing in safe mode. No change to the problem.

Can you please tell me where I should look for the instal-XXX.rdf file that is not being found. I can check the location for the file, and I'll also ensure that the NFS drive is not used for that directory. Any more info about the NS install process would be helpful in sorting this out.

Thanks again,

elg

Giorgio,

Problem solved. I discovered the directory used for the temporary file and soft linked it from the NFS drive to the local hard disk. The problem immediately went away.

Thanks again for your help. Living without NoScript for a while has reminded me how terrible it is to be inundated with scripts and popups all the time. I'll send a donation your way.
