How to suppress internal D/L manager to background load?

Post by forcemaker »

Hi, let me explain you my concern:

When clicking a download link in FF, normally the internal download manager starts with the dialogue "Select how to open your download"(1). While this window is opened, FF starts to download the file in the background.

This might be convenient in many cases as the user saves time by this background download, until he/she selects the target directory for download or the proper D/L manager.

But this behaviour can be quite bad if the download is e.g. from "One click hosters" like Rapidshare and Megaupload: as long as you are not a premium user, the download link will be functional for only ONE download.

In conclusion:
[*] as a download starts in the internal D/L manager
[*] I choose within the above mentioned dialogue e.g. FlashGot
[*] Flashgot starts e.g. DownThemAll!
[*] while the internal D/L manager cancels its download
[*] DownThemAll now starts the download itself
[*] BUT since it has already started once, the link isn't valid anymore!

As you can see, this problem is a little bit complicated. Even if it maybe seems quite unlikely to you to happen, I experience this problem quite often.

To configure FlashGot to "start downloads immediatly" (1) seems not to solve this problem since the internal D/L manager seems to start, even if it is only a few seconds.

The possible solution:
I guess that there is an internal setting in FF (e.g. entering about:config in URL bar) which handles this behavior, but i couldn't find it.

Can you help me in this case?

Thanks, forcemaker.

(1) I got only the german FF installed, so I translated this text into English.

Using alt+click bypasses the built-in download manager completely.
