No longer able to download hotmail attachments

Post by davagui »

Since NoScript version 1.9.9.14 installed on my Firefox 3.0.14 (on Ubuntu 9.04), I can no longer do what I always had done:
left-clic on a hotmail attachment,
then right-clic on NoScript logo
and from the -Blocked Objects- submenu, clic on "Temporarily allow.../GetAttachment.aspx"
The Save As winddow would come out and let me save the attachment.

But now it does not, the page only kind of reloads but no Save As window appear.

I tried dissabling several NoScript options and finally it worked by dissabling "Forbid <IFRAME>"
(from the "Addittional restrictions for untrusted sites" in the "Embedded Objects" tab)

But I don't want to dissable that every time I want to download hotmail attachments, why doesn't it work like before?

Re: No longer able to download hotmail attachments

I'm sorry that this post went unanswered for so long.

I don't use hotmail, but Yahoo did a similar thing with uploads: They went from direct upload of attachments to inserting an IFRAME object with the attachment object inside. (Please don't ask me why they did that. I have no idea. It wasn't broken before.... I was very unhappy, but since it's free... )

So I have to click the attach button, navigate to *anything* (doesn't matter what, as you'll see in a second), and attempt to attach it. Nothing much happens, but the NS logo turns partly red, indicating a blocked object, whereas before it was blue (all of Yahoo Mail was trusted). So I open the NS menu, click the green "Allow unknown@hxxp://attach.mud.mail.yahoo.com" (or something similar). This gets the attachment IFrame and object loaded, but now you have to repeat the upload attempt, this time with the real thing that you want to upload. That's why I said it didn't matter what you picked for the first attempt. You have to start all over again anyway. It just won't even *offer* the attachment frame and object to you until you attempt to upload.

Once you've done this, you're good for as long as you keep that Yahoo session alive. In other words, you can do further uploads to other messages without having to go through that process.

It's very annoying, but I prefer the inconvenience to unchecking "Forbid IFrame" each time, especially because I might forget to re-check it when done, and also because that allows *all* IFrames at Yahoo, which may include ads I don't want to see or run.

For some reason, *downloads* at Yahoo will work on the first try after allowing the download object. Go figure.

I assume that the Hotmail download situation is much like the Yahoo upload situation, so I hope this helps.

There is hope: The next generation of NoScript, 2.x, will have much finer control over specific objects at specific sites, rather than blanket permissions for all IFrames, etc. Release date is not yet known.

Again, I'm sorry your post fell through the cracks. Should you ever have another issue, and not receive a response within a few days, or a week at most, please make a second request to bump it up. We try, but once they slip off the front page, they tend to get missed. Thanks for your patience.
