Global install issues on FireFox 3.0.14 (ubuntu)

I'm trying to clean up my multiple firefox profiles, but I want to force noscript to be reinstalled into each one.
I do web development, and have about 20 profiles I use to keep my online banking separate from my web
development activities (which enables JavaScript on different sets of web sites), which are also separate from
my Google account.

I manually deleted the extension directory that noscript uses ~/.mozilla/firefox/<profile_name>/{73*}.

I want to install the .XPI file in a central place so that each profile sees an extension to automatically
install the next time I use that profile.

I tried the --install-global-extension option, but noscript seems to still have a problem loading correctly.
Since I need to have separate noscript preferences in each Firefox profile, I'm not sure that keeping the
extensions in one directory (such as /usr/lib/firefox-addons/extension) will work for me.

I hope you get an answer for your problem. I have the exact same situation. I can install globally using one user account, but other user accounts can't use the extension. I get this error message:
Firefox could not install this item because "install.rdf" (provided by the item) is not well-formed or does not exist. Please contact the author about this problem.
I wouldn't be surprised if you got the same. Giorgio, have you tested global installations and multiple user accounts?

BTW, this used to work.
BTW2, I posted my original question here: http://forums.informaction.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2318
