Just lost the entire allow-list

Post by Dwedit »

I didn't do anything out of the ordinary besides closing and reopening my browser, but all my allowed sites for Noscript are gone now.

Are you on the Tor Browser? If so, it's a known Tor Browser bug, unfortunately, but should not happen again.

Also, you may want to check latest development build which makes setting persistence much more resistant to issues of this kind.

Last thing: you may also want to periodically make a backup using NoScript Options>Export (unfortunately this can't be automated due to WebExtensions limitations).

I'll add a "me too" for this. I'm running Firefox version 110.0 (last updated 9 days ago on Feb 14, 2023) on a Windows 11 desktop. I'm running NoScript version 11.4.17rc1 last updated February 22, 2023. As that does not show the time I tracked that down and it looks like the update was at 2023-02-22 21:44 on my system. I shut down and reboot my computer each night meaning this morning may be the first time I cold-started Firefox since that update.

Edit: The behavior is shifting. My Per-site permissions list shows 39 entries which seems low.
Earlier https://map.purpleair.com/was hanging with no display when NS was active. It's now working.
https://www.cnn.com/ though still paints the header/footer but no content when NS is active. If I temp-trust that site then it works.
https://informeddelivery.usps.com hang when I try to sign in. Again, temp trust fixes this.

Thus it appears that NS lost some, or possibly all, of my personalization. It's not a huge deal as now that I understand what happened I can start rebuilding my trusted sites list though perhaps I should figure out a way to back up the list in a plain text file.

So you're on the development channel, where actually changes to the persistence mechanism (supposedly for the better) were made.

I did test them a lot, but this might mean some configurations break nonetheless, sorry for that but good we caught it before going stable (thank you!)

It would be interesting if you had a recent NoScript Options>Export or profile backup to check (and for you to restore).

@Dwedit, what about you? Are you using Firefox or the Tor Browser? NoScript 11.4.16 (stable) or 11.4.17rc1 (dev build)?

Unfortunately, no on the backups. Figuring out how to do the export had been one of those things lurking at the edge of my radar scans... Thank you for the hint on NoScript Options>Export. I tried that and it's very nice and is something I can now easily add to my normal archive/backup system.

OK, I've suspended the automatic updates on the beta channel and retracted 11.4.17rc1 from the website.
Started investigating, I'm probably onto something. Thanks again for the precious report and sorry for the hassle.
