So are they really going to "kill the URL", i.e. outright replace URLs with something else? How is this even possible?
Or are they just going to stop displaying URLs as-is?

How could it be? The url is the adress of the page. It's impossible to avoid using urls. How could I access, for example, the page [link removed by moderator], if I didn't know the url ?!
