Noscript not saving settings in Firefox Quantum

Post by CC »

Hi,

It seems that Noscript does not save any changes I make to the blocklist/whitelist at all. Whenever I quit Firefox, all changes I have made are gone.

I had been using Noscript without any issues, even after upgrading to Firefox Quantum. However, the above issue started immediately after resetting Firefox and reinstalling Noscript.

Here are the reproduction steps for Firefox Quantum 57.0.1 with Noscript 10.1.5.3:
  1. Start firefox.
  2. Visit a website that uses scripts (e.g. https://forums.informaction.com/viewforum.php?f=7 )
  3. Set one of the websites listed in the Noscript menu to "trusted" (e.g. https://forums.informaction.com )
  4. Quit Firefox
  5. Start Firefox
  6. Visit the website from step 2.
Result: The website from step 3. is listed as "default".
Expected result: The website from step 3. is listed as "trusted".

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

When you set the site to Trusted, you are temporarily allowing it. Click the clock to deactivate it and make the permission permanent.

Wow, so that was what was going on! Thanks a lot for the help!

May I suggest adding "Temporarily Allow" as a separate option next to "default", "trusted" and "untrusted"?

As a new user to the new Noscript UI, I do not find the current behavior intuitive, and the clock is easy to overlook in my humble opinion.
I feel that the new Noscript UI is going in a good direction, but I would highly recommend performing some usability testing to iron out these sorts of issues.

Thanks again, and best of luck with the continued development!

+1. Lots of people have made this suggestion. Here's one example - https://forums.informaction.com/viewtop ... 513#p91513

+1 as well, either that, or move the clock icon (within the tab) more to the left so it stops getting auto-activated.

Could also help to put TRUSTED (Temp) as a label at first. Maybe put a tick button instead of clock to make it permanent.
Because I see the point that temp allow and trusted share one button, as they are the same mode and share the same configuration.

It is always auto-activated.

Not true. I can repro this 100% of the tme. Try this:

STR:
[0] Go to a site you know you already have marked as Trusted
[1] Set it back to Default
[2] Now, move slowly to the right so that you are just on the left edge of the Trusted icon (as soon as you get a hand)
[3] Click to re-set as Trusted
[4] Clock is not expanded, therefore it is not set as a Temporary allow.

I do this all the time with a 100% repro rate. (runing macOS, but that shouldn't matter)

Give it a try.

@8-bit: On my side, it doesn't appear to be based on the mouse cursor position. It looks related to the fact the popup stays open, and the page never reloads, between when you set Default and back to Trusted.

@barbaz: Where you able to repro though? Of course, this is only a work around and not a permanent fix, but it does work. Need to keep the pointer more to the low left side of the trusted icon tab. There are actually a few pixels of "dead space" between the two tabs which is the ideal place to be. Tedious yes, but works once you get the hang of it. Then, I reload the tab, or click away, and it's set as permanently trusted

Of course, I can always just click the clock icon to contract it - probably easier ;)

Yes can reproduces this. Behaves like in the options. But I think this is intended.

But cannot reproduce when doing:
[0] Go to a site you know you already have marked as Trusted
[1] Set it back to Default
[1a] close and reopen pop-up
[2] Now, move slowly to the right so that you are just on the left edge of the Trusted icon (as soon as you get a hand)
[3] Click to re-set as Trusted
[4] Clock is not expanded, therefore it is not set as a Temporary allow.

Then clock is always active. As intended.

Yep, when adding your step [1a] I cannot repro my original instructions.
I agree with both you and barbaz that it would be a good idea to add a temporarily allow state to the current list of tabs.

If you want to quickly set NEW sites to permanently TRUSTED then the current layout is actually quite handy for that, as you just have to double-click the for that domain. :)

When I click Trusted, and I see the blue S, and then I hover the mouse over that clock, the tooltip says "Temporarily Allow (Trusted)"

That makes me think if I PRESS the clock, it will only be a temporary permission.

Since MOST of the time I make permissions permanent, I'd also like either to press the S and then a temp icon (the clock!) to make it TEMPORARY, or else have a separate button altogether for temporary. As is, it is counter intuitive to me. If that tooltip said "Permanently Allow" it would make more sense. But still... I'd rather not have to press two buttons for each entry.

Now that I understand the 'double click' I think it works well enough. However, the fact that I floundered for three days and came here to discover what was wrong is an indication that either a) I'm a dolt, or b) the UI could use a bit of help somehow (a better, or two-state tool tip depending on how it's set). The fact that I knew to come here etc. probably rules out "a" :-)

I sent in a donation a couple weeks ago when the upgrade to the new version of FF was being developed. I want to mention that since I started using NoScript about five years ago, I have not gotten a spec of malware on a PC. One has to manage the addon, and it isn't for everybody (I didn't put it on my 93-year old dad's PC), I am willing to use it and keep possibly crippling malware off my PC, better than after-the-fact removal e.g. Malwarebytes which might be after one's identity has been stolen or bank account drained.

So thanks for the great too and great work!
