I used old versions of NS and Ff for a long time without problems.
I am not a very experienced computer user and having same problems
as others too with NoScript 10.
Therefore I would like to know if there is a danger of damaging Firefox altogether
when testing new NS. Or even worse; destroying Ubuntu 16.04??

Or is it better for us inexperienced users waiting until NoScript will achieve a stable version?

There's actually less risk with NS 10, since there is less that NS can do in FF57. WebExtensions are a barrier to harm.

I'd say if there's no reason to jump today, then just give it some time. You can even wait till FF58. By then NoScript 10 should've gotten a lot more mature.
I don't think there were major security issues with FF56 and NoScript 5 should keep you safe from some harm, if properly used.

If you're going to stay on an older Firefox in order to use classic NoScript, then your best choice is Firefox 52 ESR, since it will continue to receive security patches.
