Youtube videos sometimes blocked (but not audio)

Post by Beayn »

Recently NoScript in FF46.01 has started to randomly block Youtube videos (HTML5) from playing properly. It appears to do it on any video, but the latest was a SciShow one
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfVLlxApskY

It blocks the video from playing, but not audio. I still get the HTML5 play / pause buttons, If I refresh the video a few times it will play normally.

If I click noscript it shows a redirector.gvt1.com which appears to be a google site, and appears to be for ads, however the audio is always for the video selected, NOT an ad.

Could someone clarify what's going on with this? I've done virus scans so I don't think it's that. Should I just "allow" gvt1.com? Never needed to before!

Never seen anything like that on Youtube.
What's that weird Windows disk drive looking icon?
What the heck is gvt1.com??

Anyway what does https://www.youtube.com/html5 say about your browser, anything unsupported?

OK wait looking at that url more that blocked video looks like maybe a video ad actually, not related to the video?
What happens if you just click that X in the upper right of the placeholder to close it?

Maybe the ad, its own object, happened to put itself directly overtop the video window.

The video window went through its 30 seconds or whatever & the video itself started playing.

The video part of the clip obscured by that ad you're getting.

Remove the ad & I'd suspect your video will be there along with your audio.

Odd too, you would think, that the ad seems to be served as a .flv.
Can't say I've ever run across gvt1.com - or at least that I was aware.

I didn't notice the little X in the upper right corner. I'll try that next time It appears. I normally just click refresh a few times until it goes away. Now that I think about it, I think some youtube ads have been getting through around the same time this started. Youtube appears to have changed the way some ads work and NoScript is either completely unable to block some of them, or they get blocked in the way I've shown here. It's definitely weird.

Well, NoScript is not an adblocker, so it's not surprising it's letting ads through. If you want ads blocked you'll need to install another add-on alongside NoScript for that purpose, such as uBlock Origin.
