APIs are now copyrightable in the US

But this isn't completely settled yet, hopefully re-implementing / reusing other people's APIs while appropriately crediting the API's creator(s) will at least be considered fair use.

Copyright made sense when it applied to hand-drawn maps and charts. It makes a lot less sense when applied to digital copying. And it makes no sense at all in this case.
