NoScript icon does not appear

I am using Firefox (my problem is the same for 3.0 & 3.5) I have loaded NoScript and it works fine but the warning and site release mechanism is only visible on the second and subsequent instances of Firefox running. Thus my initial Firefox instance cannot release sites, if a second instance is started this will have the NoScript features activated. I can then close the original instance of Firefox and carry on as normal. It works but its a bore to have to open Firefox twice and then close one before surfing. Is there a solution. I have loaded and reloaded Firefox and NoScript to no avail

That shouldn't be happening. Try these steps, in order, until NoScript is working right again.
1) The NoScript settings became messed up somehow. Reset the NoScript Options by pressing Reset at the bottom of the Options dialog. Export your whitelist before doing that if you've added any trusted or untrusted sites you'd like to restore after NoScript is working again.
2) The extensions database is corrupted. Exit Firefox, delete the files mentioned here in this linked article, restart Firefox. Uncorrupted versions of the files will be automatically regenerated.
Corrupt_extension_files
3) There might be an extension conflict. Use the Add-ons manager to temporarily disable any other Firefox extensions you have installed, except for NoScript.
4) Perform a
Standard Diagnostic. If NoScript isn't working by the time you get to the "Create a new profile" step, a new profile with no other extensions besides NoScript should work right.
Hope this helps. Please let us know whether it does.

Recently we've seen NoScript and other extensions broken by the .NET Framework Assistant and by SiteAdvisor.
Couldy you try
Standard Diagnostic to check if it's an extensions conflict?

I've tried all the suggestions in the two posts and not had any luck. I just tried to post this reply on the first instance of Firefox, but NoScript couldn't release informaction so the reply couldn't go. I opened a second instance, released informaction and its OK

Do you mean you disabled all your extensions except NoScript and the problem still persists?

What happens if you run Fx in Safe Mode?
What happens if you uninstall NoScript?

In Safe mode Firefox acts in exactly the same way, the first instanve is no good subsequent ones are fine.
If NoScript is disable or uninstalled Firefox works fine

What is the "site release mechanism"?
Is it only that you have those particular menu items enabling them deselected?
Options | Appearance | Show...

The "site release mechanism" referred to is the NoScript symbol at the bottom right of the Firefox window which allows selected release of the frames on the site. I have noticed a further quirk in Firefox's behavior. When NoScript is installed Firefox tabs work, when No Script is not installed Tabs do not work. No adjustment is made to any setting save install and uninstall NoScript.

That's an extremely unusual set of problems you are describing.
By frames release do you mean allow scripts, or allow blocked objects?
Have you always run more than one instance of Firefox in a session?
When did you first install NoScript? Did it ever work acceptably for you and if so, which version?
Do you have any other extensions installed when you don't have NoScript installed and the tabs don't work?

I do mean scripts
I often run 2 or more instances of Firefox
I first installed 'NoScript' & Firefox on this computer in May 2008 when I built it. It all worked fine until about 2 weeks ago.
I do not have any extensions running. I uninstalled both Skype and the IE renderer.

With the information you've shared, I can't think of any more ways to find out if NS is at the bottom of your problems.
The Skype extension is notorious for seriously breaking Fx. Uninstalling it is not straightforward.
The looping error-prone multiple instance symptom is quite marked in the Skype forum threads on Fx that I had a brief look at.
I suggest you may have more chance of tracking down these problems in the Skype forums.
Failing that, if NS is vital to you, and you've done all the troubleshooting steps with safe mode used to eliminate all major processes, perhaps you may like to do a complete reinstall of your Fxs?
Sorry I can't contribute any more ideas here.

I am having the exact same problem. I've done a clean install of FX. Installed NS with no other add-ons and the bar at the bottom of the page will not appear. Launch a second instance of FX, load the same webpage, and the bar appears. This all started about a week or two ago after an update. I believe it was an FX update to 3.5.1. Several of my add-ons were disabled after the update and I noticed this behavior out of NS.
