[RESOLVED] FF 31ESR noscript icon missing

I installed FF 31 ESR today. The noscript icon is nowhere to be found. Yes I clicked on View and then Toolbars and Customize.
There I have a choice of two icons I can add: Temporarily allow and Revoke Temporarily. If I drag them to the status bar at the bottom, the icons are gray and neither does anything.
I tried going back to the default theme. That didn't work.
I have now uninstalled and reinstalled the noscript addon twice. Nothing has changed.
I guess my next move would be to uninstall v 31 and re-install v28 where noscript was working.

I also run PaleMoon 24.7.2 and noscript is working perfectly on that. I do not want to update Palemoon until I can get noscript working in Firefox.

Any suggestions on something else I can try?

Why do you run both Firefox *and* PaleMoon? Personally I was able to *replace* my Firefox with PaleMoon.

Well, quite frankly, that is exactly what I would suggest...
A slightly smarter idea security-wise would be to downgrade instead to Firefox 24 ESR - but since you have PaleMoon, that would make using Firefox even more pointless...
In either case (according to reports from other users who downgraded) the NoScript icon will then become available in Customize.

Note that as Fx 28 and Fx 24 ESR are now unsupported by Mozilla, downgrading to those versions will mean you have a browser with publicly known vulnerabilities. However, in my personal experience (I've used outdated Firefox & PaleMoon a LOT - and still do  ), careful use of NoScript can keep you safe enough that as long as you're using the latest release of your preferred major browser version, you don't need to worry about browser vulnerabilities.

(Tried Australis once, just to see what it's like, and I gave up on it for good after 1 minute because of exactly the sort of issue you've got.)

I will upgrade when I get the browser working.

First I wanted to install FF 31 ESR after I got portable FF 31 ESR tweaked the way I wanted it. Incidentally, no script works on the portable version.

When FF installed works, then I will remove AdBlockPlus fro PM 24 and update it to v 25.

I prefer to have more than one browser installed. I do help people troubleshoot and it helps if I can tackle the problem with different browsers.

I am aware that both FF 24 ESR and 28 installed are unsupported. That's the reason I'm trying to upgrade my browser.
Re-installing an unsupported browser, doesn't solve my problem with the noscript missing icon.

Here's the portable version with the noscript icon working properly
Image

so why when I installed the same version, is it not working? That is the heart of the problem.

If it can't be solved, then I'll continue using the portable version.

In that case, can you completely close Fx, backup your profile, then overwrite your installed Fx profile with the portable Fx profile?

That makes sense. So you're a power user then :)

Since you're a power user who has Fx 31 mostly for testing... if simply copying the portable Fx profile to the installed Fx doesn't solve it, see if the following gets the toolbar icon visible?
1) export your NS settings: NoScript Options > Export (on the very bottom)
2) create a new, clean profile in the installed Fx, install NoScript there
3) import back your NS settings (Import button on the very bottom of NoScript Options)
4) make other changes you want

This (disappearing NS icon) also happened to me on installing FF 33 (Mac) and then, of course, reinstalling my extensions including NS.

In my case I discovered that I had installed an extension called "The Addon Bar (restored) 3.2" which adds a SECOND Add-on bar. For some reason this extension decided that I would rather have the NS icon (and another couple of extension icons) on the new add-on bar. Trouble is, I had chosen not to view the new add-on bar; hence, no NS icon.

It's unlikely this is the cause of your problem, but I'm putting it out there in case it might be.

Thanks Malbone. I don't have the addon bar installed.

I'll try launching 31ESR with no addons, except noscript, just to see if the icon appears.

barbaz, I have no idea how to overwrite a profile from a portable version to an installed version. Have any instructions?

I don't use Windows or portable Firefox so I don't know the exact details. However, it would go something like this:
1) Completely shut down both Firefoxes
2) Locate the installed Fx profile directory: C:\Users\<YOUR_USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[xxxxxxxx].default
3) Copy it to an external drive, then remove the external drive
4) Delete all of the contents of the installed Fx profile directory (not the folder itself)
5) Locate the portable Fx profile directory (don't know what the relative path is, but it's likely gonna be somewhere in the portable Fx folder. If you don't know, try searching for one of the filenames, say, "places.sqlite" in the portable Fx directory, and see what that comes up with. If you end up in a folder with a subfolder named "extensions" and files named "permissions.sqlite", "webappsstore.sqlite", and "prefs.js", that's probably it.)
6) Copy the entire contents of that folder into the (now empty) installed Fx profile directory
7) Start the installed Fx and see what happens... (worst case scenario, it borks - then just close/kill Fx, delete the profile folder, and restore your backup from step 3)

Thanks. I looked at the profiles for installed and portable 31ESR and there are differences. Installed has things portable does not and portable has things that installed does not.

I think what might be safer for me to do is to export the profile from my installed FF 31ESR on my desktop computer and replace that on my netbook computer. My desktop version is working fine. (Both versions are updated to 31.2.0, the latest, so there should not be differences between them except maybe a few bookmarks.)

If it gets borked, I still have the portable version and PM 25 on this computer. Then I get to try and install it again to see if the problem is fixed.

Tonight I discovered a site that would not display in PM but displayed in FF.
http://www.hbo.com/
no schedule ever appeared in PM just a black screen. In FF after a brief gray-white circle, the schedule showed up.

First thing to try there is
about:config -> right-click -> new -> string
name:

Code: Select all

general.useragent.override
value: some firefox user-agent string... how about the one at the bottom of your posts?

Code: Select all

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:31.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/31.0

Fixed noscript icon not showing! You can mark this thread solved.

I looked at the folders in Mozilla on my desktop, where it worked and my netbook, where it didn't and could not see any differences. Then I decided to start looking through particular settings. Turns out when I clicked on View, then Toolbars, I had Add-on bar enabled on the working computer. I enabled that and the noscript icon appeared below the nosquint icon. The bar was double height.

I removed an addon status-4-evar that I had installed trying to see if the icon would appear. The status bar is now single height and nosript and nosquint are side by side just like they are in PM and in the portable version of FF.

I hear through the grapevine DF died. I haven't been there in 3 years.

After being on cable for over 10 years, no way could I ever go back to dialup. I tried it once briefly when we were without power for 8 1/2 days. Boy, was it painful! It's far easier to grab a netbook or tablet and head to a hotspot than to spend time just watching email pages load.
