Videos Appear to Download But Won't Play

Flashgot has suddenly stopped downloading media. When I click on a file, it appears to download normally and I can see it progressing, but in the firefox download manager, it appears with a black arrow at the front, and the video (or audio) file will not play. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling firefox, and also trying to play it in various media players (I use VLC). I've never had a problem with the programme before. Any thoughts?
