[RESOLVED] NS causes "Address Not Found" at 1st connection

Hi there
Since the latest update of NoScript to version 1.9.5, every time I connect to my homepage (BBC News low-graphics, which I have permanently allowed in NoScript) via Firefox 3.0.11, there is a page load error giving the message "Address Not Found". In fact this page appears even before making the actual connection. When I'm connected, clicking "Try Again" twice in succession loads the BBC page fine. Disabling NoScript resolves the issue - I can connect without the page load error, and don't see "Address Not Found" displayed before actually connecting - and re-enabling NoScript brings the problem back. It occurs every time. In IE8 there is no problem getting straight to my home page. I've tried the Reset option for NoScript but it didn't help.
Other Add-ons installed in Fx are ABP, British Dictionary, Download Helper, IE Tab, Java Quick Starter, McAfee Site Advisor & WOT. I have tried disabling them, but the same page load error occurs if NoScript is left enabled.
NoScript is an excellent add-on & I'll keep using it, but is this a known bug in 1.9.5? Didn't have the problem with the previous version. Can't see any other posts about it. Thanks for any help. I'm using XP Home with SP3, Sunbelt Personal Firewall, AVG Free.

URL of the BBC webpage?
Does Error Console point out anything when this happens?

Thanks therube. The url of the BBC page is:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/text_only.stm
I deleted all temp internet files & temp files & tried connecting again with Fx, and with NoScript enabled, with the result already described. After that, Error Console brought up two things:
No chrome package registered for chrome://saff/locale/safe.dtd
And then this:
5CY
code: 0x8000ffff (NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED)
[nsIPrefBranch.clearUserPref]" nsresult: "0x8000ffff
(NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED)" location: "JS frame ::
chrome://dotnetassistant/content/bootstrap.js ::
BootStrapDotNetAsssitantExtension :: line 52" data: no]
The "Chrome" references seem a bit weird. I did have Google Chrome browser installed at one time, but got rid of it as comprehensively as possible, cos I was running into hassles with Google Notifier after installing Chrome. But there's a "chrome" folder in the Mozilla Firefox folder in Program files, so Fx "chrome" looks like something different and nothing to do with *Google* Chrome*, hopefully.
Thanks for your help in this. Having to click "Try Again" twice to get online with Fx is not the end of the world, but it's nice to have things working right!

Do you have McAfee Site Advisor installed?
(I believe that is the <first> "chrome:" reference. It is not related to Google Chrome.)
If you disable that, but leave NoScript enabled, does the problem still occur?

The second error is from the infamous Microsoft .NET Assistant.
Please
check this thread.

Thank you.
Firstly, I do have the Site Advisor add-on, but disabling it while leaving NoScript enabled didn't resolve the problem.
I was inflicted with the Microsoft .NET Assistant add-on some time ago, checked out what it was and uninstalled it completely (didn't just disable it). I've now looked at the thread on the subject and tried two things. Firstly deleted the value "20a82645-c095-46ed-80e3-08825760534b" in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Firefox\extensions". Rebooted, problem still there. Then cut all the files from C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Windows Presentation Foundation\DotNetAssistantExtension, but leaving the empty folder. Problem still present, so I put the files back.
So I don't have Microsoft .NET Assistant showing in Fx add-ons. I did see that Windows Presentation Foundation was listed as a plug-in, which I'm guessing was a left-over from Microsoft .NET Assistant, but disabling it hasn't helped.
Currently my Error Console is showing:
No chrome package registered for chrome://saff/locale/safe.dtd
Error: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80040111
(NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE) [nsIChannel.contentType]" nsresult:

So "chrome" is no longer being referenced under "Errors" but the problem remains. I'm wondering about a Clean Reinstall of Firefox, or whether to live with having to click a couple of times to get to my homepage (I can also connect to the internet via my ISP, and then open Firefox, which loads the homepage without the "Address Not Found" showing first).
I'd be very grateful for any comments.

Hi Giorgio
First, a mistake in my post above: I said "So "chrome" was no longer being referenced under "Errors"". What I meant was that "dotnetassistant" was no longer being referenced.
But I'm posting again to say I set up a new Firefox Profile, imported my bookmarks and freshly installed the same add-ons as previously, but exactly the same connection issue described in my first post arose when I added NoScript as my last add-on (Page Load Error, Address Not Found). So there still seems to be an issue. Another strange development is that the time-out for notifications about blocked scripts no longer works: the notification remains on screen until manually exited. I found this in both my original Profile & the new one (I've now deleted the new Profile as it wasn't helping).
If no-one else is having this connection issue I'll leave it here & live with the situation.
Regards - Jonno

Hi, Jonno. Thank you for your report.

If you install NoScript as your first extension, and then add your other extensions one at a time, you might be able to find out which one is causing the conflict. I bet Giorgio would like to know which one it is.

Wait a minute! I think I'm able to duplicate your problem in a clean test profile with only NoScript 1.9.5.73 installed. I have to go out for a while, but I'll add info to this post when I get back.
Edit: I'm not able to reach the BBC homepage at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/ in a clean profile
without any extensions installed. This does not look like a NoScript problem. The Firefox error message is "Firefox can't find the server at
http://www.bbc.co.uk".
Edit: Looks like there might be an issue with BBC.

Thanks very much Alan. However, the problem doesn't seem to lie with the BBC. I tried changing my homepage - first to Times Online, then Google Advanced search (exiting Fx each time) but still got the same page load error. I have found that with no add-ons enabled, I get through first time to whatever homepage I have set. But enabling NoScript as my sole add-on always results in a page load error.
It's very strange that you are having trouble with the BBC site! Don't know why that is, but my own issue does seem down to a problem with NoScript.
Cheers- Jonno.

Maybe an extension conflict then.
Could you try
Standard Diagnostic keeping NoScript enabled, in order to find the potential 2nd actor?

Thanks Giorgio. I worked through Standard Diagnostic. Having got step 7, the problem was still there. So I went on to 8 and totally uninstalled Firefox, opting not to keep any bookmarks, settings etc. I also uninstalled Site Advisor, as I know it adds itself automatically as an add-on if it is present on the computer at installation of Firefox. In the Firefox uninstall, I deleted the Mozilla Firefox folder in Program Files, and everything relating to Firefox in Application Data.
I then rebooted & did a completely new install of Firefox 3.0.11 and imported my bookmarks from IE8. I could connect without the page load error. I then installed NoScript as my only add-on, restarted Firefox, and went offline. At the next connection attempt the page load error with "Address Not Found" was back! So it doesn't look like an add-on conflict. Would seem more like a connection configuration issue, except for the fact that I connect fine with NoScript disenabled & only get the problem when NoScript is enabled. I'm baffled - if there was a real problem with NoScript itself, you'd expect others to be reporting it.
