NoScript login/form issue?

Post by malonso »

Hi All,

I started noticing something really strange after FF (v3.0.11) updated NoScript to v1.9.5. Immediately after the update installed, anytime I would attempt to login to a particular website (http://www.myskeye.com) it would take a really long time for the login process (read: form submission) to complete; typically around 15-20 seconds but sometimes as much as 70 seconds. I have several FF add-ons so I disable all of them - which resolved the issue - and went one by one to isolate the issue and as soon as I enabled Noscript the issue started happening again. Just to make sure it wasn't simply unlucky timing and something on the backend of the site being goofy, I attempted to login to the site using IE immediately after attempting to login w/FF (w/NoScript enabled), and I was actually able to log in and out several times in IE before FF finishing processing the first login.

Please let me know what I can do to provide more information on this matter. Is there a debug/logging option? I'm one of the lead developers on the site I mentioned and can setup accounts for anyone interested in troubleshooting this issue.

Thanks in advance.

PS - I'm a huge NoScript fan and the first thing I do after freshly installing FF is to include this add-on. Thanks for all of your hard work.

Cheers

Do you have myskeye Allowed? And how about the google* & yahoo* domains?

If I had to guess, I would think it ClearClick related.
Try disabling ClearClick & see if it makes a difference. (Options | Plugins -> ClearClick ...)

Thanks for the quick response. Sorry, I can't believe I forgot to state that all script domains have been enabled.

I went into the options and unchecked ClearClick for trusted and untrusted, hit ok, and restarted FF (not sure if I needed to or not). Unfortunately, the issue still persists. I admittedly know 0 about ClearClick but I would think that if anything (unexpected) was going to happen, it would be that I am not allowed to login as opposed to simply delaying the process of logging me in.

I performed some tests with the account you kindly provided, but I couldn't reproduce this issue on 3.0.11 nor on 3.5.
Maybe an extension conflict?
Could you try Standard Diagnostic keeping NoScript enabled?

Thanks a lot for your help. I started it in safe mode and all extensions/themes disabled and had the following results (times are approximate due to the fact that I simply ran the "date" command in a terminal as soon as a process started or completed):

All add-ons off - ~4s
NoScript on - ~33s

In an effort to get something slightly more accurate I enabled Firebug and stumbled upon the notion that the problem may not be a result of the form submission but may actually happen going from the home page to almost any other page on the site. (e.g Home -> FAQ via clicking on the tab at the top). Doing tests this way I got these results as displayed in the Net tab of Firebug:

Only Firebug on - 2.17s
(http://i42.tinypic.com/2ekp6k2.png)
Firebug and NoScript on - 1.04m
(http://i39.tinypic.com/34441td.png)

Again, during these tests I periodically would attempt to perform these same tests in IE and could go back and forth as I would have expected. It is absolutely possible that I am the problem here and that this is some absurd flaw in my code that is only showing up here for some apparent reason. Thoughts?

Another random tidbit is that if I am on the homepage (http://www.myskeye.com/) and click on the FAQ link (http://www.myskeye.com/faq) so that it opens in the current tab it will take a long time but if I have that link open in a new tab it happens almost immediately.

Is this useful? Not really, but I thought I would pass along all the info I have.

Could you try on a clean profile with a fresh NoScript install? maybe it's specific to some of your settings...

Good idea. I just tried that and w/out installing any add-ons (.Net framework was on there) installed, the test I mentioned loads quite fast. I also get a fairly decent loadtime after installing NoScript and leaving all the script domains blocked. Once I allow myskeye.com though, going from home to FAQ takes forever. Is it possible to point me to a link for 1.9.4.91 so that I can confirm whether or not the issue was happening previously?

1.9.3.3 - Pages loaded/performed as expected
1.9.5 - Pages loaded/performed exceptionally slow
1.9.5.1 - Pages loaded/performed exceptionally slow

Do you have any links to 1.9.4.x? I did not notice any in the feed but for some reason I think I might've installed one at one point via an auto-update.

Thanks again so very much for your help w/all of this, I really appreciate it. I know you have much better things to do than hold my hand through this. Next time I am in Italy I will buy a couple rounds.***

***Disclaimer: I have never been to Italy :)

On a side note, it seems like every other time I attempt to submit a post I get redirected to that image of good ol' sly stallone. I originally chalked it up to possibly being logged out but when I navigate to other pages on the site, it still has me logged in.

Does the problem persist if you turn off ABE from NoScript Options|Advanced|ABE?
Since you're the developer, might it be you're accessing the site as a local IP?
You get Stallowned by the antispam filters, depending on what you post and especially if/when you're not using a Mozilla browser.

Yes, it still persists if I turn that off (tested using 1.9.5.1). I also tried disabling ClearClick w/out any success.
I am testing this w/our live site which is not w/in our network and so this (in theory) should not have any impact.
Ahhh, ok. I figured it was something spam related but I was just confused since I had been able to make at least one post using IE8; I just copied the posts that got flagged and logged in via FF and posted them. I do my best not to use IE but had it open so that I could reference the various instructions from both yourself and mozilla.

Interesting, I have no problem with that site, it loads instantly practically.

I realized that I was using it without allowed which was instant nearly but with the site allowed, it does take forever and just sit there trying to load when you click a link on the top, not sure what's going on.

Ah, the clue, now we can figure it out :P.

That "newsticker" is highly CPU intensive.

When myskeye is Allowed, the ticker runs.

The reason FAQ is very slow to open is because your CPU is busy with the ticker, with no time left to process the link.

The same sort of thing will happen on highly resource intensive Flash sites.

Allow myskeye.
Observe CPU usage.
Click FAQ.
(not a whole lot happens)
Momentarily click to a different page/application, returning just as quickly.
Observe CPU usage.
You will see CPU usage subside (as you click away), & in that same instant, just as you return to myskeye, you will observe the FAQ page loading.
