Can separate subheadings be given for DASH downloads.

It becomes a obvious error trying to inadvertently dl only a video or audio file from DASH since getting used to such a pattern of FG display for regular complete downloads..

1. Can the DASH display be separately brought down under "Video" and "Audio" with bold letters , so that the user knows that if he DLs only one it will be incomplete.
2 . Can the selection , be marked immediately and the screen persist till he marks the next and clicks a separate download button, dismisses the screen by voluntarily going one above, rather than just going off on selection as now.
3. Can the muxing too be automated rather than being made voluntarily. Of course FG should lead it to the muxing software screen after providing the inputs for the final confirmation from the user.
4. What about custom preferences. When a high quality video is selected it obviously does well with high quality audio. What about default quality preferences like Video:1 - Audio:1 , Video:2 -Audio:2 , Video:3-Audio:3 where 1 ,2 ,3 could represent HIGH , MEDIUM , LOW. The only advantage is FG presents the DASH screen with the choices already marked and the user has to clear that or make a small change before that.

1. given the little we "know" about it to begin with, at this point i would think its up to the user to know & realize just what they want & need

2. similarly, you get the video, you want to audio, go back & get it, separately

3. that is on a to do list

4.
> high quality video is selected it obviously does well

arguable at best

> with high quality audio

ditto

plus one might want a higher quality video & would accept lower quality audio, or vice versa

and "quality" is going to be arguable in any case
don't know that it is written anywhere that DASH > non-dash, much less that any particular clip is "better" then another
about all you can say is you are offered different sizes & formats
the only way to know is to download & look/listen for yourself

(Now, who's going to determine if there is any quality difference between any/all of these ;-).)
Early on, I took a look at one decades old set of clips a while back & made some notes (& don't recall all my thoughts at the time, but)...

Code: Select all

272 MB ~300 kbps 480x360 - baseline, non-dash

DASH	"large" 480 MB 652 kbps 640x480, a hair better 480 > 272
 		 "medium" 200 MB 267 kbps 480x360, a hair worse 272 > 200
		 "small" 170 MB 242 kbps 320x240, a hair worse 272 > 170

(*plus* AUDIO is separate, 88, 44 or 16 MB, large, medium, small)
so, if i wanted to save bytes, DASH may work, but as far as quality, DASH "large" does not justify itself, with this clip at least
A lot of clips have what I call "wasted bytes". IOW, the source was poor to begin with, & "throwing" extra bytes into it does nothing to improve quality. Now if you start with a quality source, then that all changes. Likewise, depending on what you're looking for & how it was encoded, a "large" could end up being much better quality then "small".
