[Resolved] Plugin content doesn't start

Post by RickDangerous »

Hi,

I found a bug that occurs only since either Firefox 24 or NoScript 2.6.8.x. To reproduce you need to forbid Adobe Flash plugin and go to a full page Flash content such as this one: https://youtube.googleapis.com/v/oHg5SJYRHA0

When you click on the NoScript blocking placeholder to allow the content, Flash Player doesn't start like it used to.
I don't know if that changes anything but I set NS so it does not ask me to confirmation when I click the placeholder. Also, restrictions are applied to trusted sites.

Workaround: Refresh the page after content is allowed
If Flash plugin isn't forbidden in NS config, the bug never occur

Thanks :)

Well, when I follow that link, Firefox immediately wants to download a 4.3KB Flash file. So I'm not sure what's going on there.

Thanks for the fast reply :)

It could be because your profile is set up to download SWF instead of open them in browser.

This is the SWF that is being loaded: https://s.ytimg.com/yts/swfbin/watch_as3-vflJM6GCe.swf
If Firefox is configured properly to reproduce this bug, you should see this SWF being loaded within the tab...otherwise you'll get a prompt.

In "Firefox > Options > Applications" I have "Flash Player SWF" set to "Use Shockwave Flash (in Firefox)".

Strange.

Yet FF loaded the clip as expected?

Suppose that is due to (NoScript) & what we do not have Allowed.

Cool, if you can reproduce it that means the problem is duly noted. Thanks ! :)

I can't help any further as I have no idea what changed in the latest NoScript and/or Firefox, all I know is that this bug is brand new and I updated both NS and Fx within the last 3 days. Nothing else has changed in my Fx profile and NS config.

[Bug] Plugin content doesn't start
You were correct when you said, "Plugin content", as this bug affects more then just "Flash", as I have seen it with PDF too.

isn't this where they say "you have been rick-rolled"? :)

i didn't see a problem with the webpage.. everything loaded and ran just fine..

even if i have to refresh a webpage in order to get flash content to play, which i have had to do, sometimes, i don't consider that to be a problem..

i am using noscript build 2.6.7.1..

That's why you don't see the problem. This issue is specific to NoScript 2.6.8x and appears unrelated to changes in Gecko 24 despite what the OP says.

While I'm here, the only change I see that might cause this behavior would be

Code: Select all

x Work-around for broken CTP notifications (bug 903675)
Yet, messing around with Click-to-Play settings (noscript.smartClickToPlay, JS permissions, Options -> Embeddings, and plugin permissions) had no effect.

However, I'm not sure how complete the changelogs are because I've seen several NS bugfixes appear without any mention...

Hey again,

I just updated to NoScript 2.6.8.2 and noticed the changelog. I'm not 100% sure but it seems that Giorgio worked on the cause of this thread's bug, so he might want to know that when it comes to the symptoms described in this thread, NS 2.6.8.2 doesn't fix anything.

Bug still occurs. Dunno why, just thought I'd let you know :)

Good luck !

I took a look at the source code and all I can think it would be is that the change in handling of plugin placeholders from 2.6.7.1 to 2.6.8.x happens not to be compatible with Gecko's method of displaying plugins as top-level content. Unfortunately no idea what exactly is going on or how to fix this :( And BTW I can't reproduce the immediate downloading behavior that Thrawn and therube are getting... so is the issue I'm experiencing therefore not the one being discussed in this topic?

Thrawn was getting a download prompt. Those who have that won't be able to reproduce the bug without making Firefox read SWF files in-browser. (see my reply to Thrawn)

therube did reproduce the bug properly :)
Sounds from your posts like you do too, unless I'm mistaken

What happens for me when loading a top-level object is that I get the placeholder and a 0-byte cache entry. When clicking the placeholder and confirming, I get a white screen, nothing else happens. Reloading at that point will download the object and display it in the active tab, and all seems normal at that point. If I downgrade NS to 2.6.7.1, I don't get this issue here.

So is this the same issue as you're getting?

Yes if by "download the object" you mean "display it within the active tab", which I think you do :)
