canot download covers

Post by Fejinwales »

I am a member of a few (completely legal) custom cover sites, since one of them moved to a new server I found that using Flashget (with Flashgot) through Firefox it took an age downloading one cover, up to 6 minutes, even then the .rar file was corrupted and I couldn't open it. In the end I took the .rar extension out of Flashgot and manually chose to download this file via Firefox download manager - worked great.

However - I would like to go back to the old way so I placed a post in the cover site forum for help. I was told that it might be a problem with the amount of simultaneous connections in Flashget - I looked in Flashget and found these choices (and settings) when I right clicked on a file I was downloading in the download window>site properties>:

Login to server was unchecked
Proxy http, ftp and rtsp/MMS were all set at 'Direct Connection'
Only Create One Connection for each file in the site was Unchecked
Number of simultaneous connections was grayed out but the Unlimited box is checked
Multi Proxy was grayed out also

I tried setting the Create only one connection to on.

All it did from then on is to download a PHP file. I reset the settings to what they were before and now all it ever does is to download a PHP file and I cannot get it back to working like it did before. but it only does this for that one cover site, I went to another cover site I am a member of and Flashgot worked there perfectly.

I also came across a default download properties dialogue:-
Enable share URL is ticked
Thread from main site has '5' in the box

I have reset the settings in Site Properties to what they were.
I never changed any in the default download properties at all
I deleted the site 'uncovered' from the site manager

Is there anything I can do to get it working again? I do not want to restore my PC with Norton Ghost if I can help it.

Sorry the post is so long winded.....

How are your cookie settings in FlashGot Options|Privacy, in Internet Explorer and in FlashGet (since FlashGet doesn't support direct cookie passing, FlashGot passes them to IE where FlashGet can read them, then deletes them).

Hi Giorgio. Referrer is set to 'Send autodetected Referrer URL'
Send Cookies is checked.

I will explain more fully what I tried to do this morning, and the results.

After noticing that a .rar cover file took over 6 minutes to download, I was a bit concerned so I tried to open it, and it threw up an error saying the there was an unexpected end to the archive. I got in touch with the admin on the site as it was only this site that was doing this. He suggested that it may be something to do with the number of simultaneous connections - so I tried this:

I right clicked on the .rar file of a cover I was downloading and I unchecked the Unlimited box and chose 1 connection - this then brought the weird way it worked and started it downloading the .rar files from this site as .php files. Reversing what I had done did not stop this behaviour.

I did a Ghost File restore of every Flashget file I could find on my PC and although it still did not work, it seemed to after a while, it could have been because I have used my CCleaner to clean the PC up.

I ought to reiterate that it downloads perfectly from everywhere else, except this one site that has recently moved to a new server. They do have some issues with uploading using Firefox, they seem to think that my problem has something to do with the number of simultaneous connections - which brings me to the first message I left in this post.

Is there any reason why when changing this setting it would make Flashget download the files from this site as php ones?

I really would like this to work as it used to, an as it does with other sites.

Thanks

Have the site owner check to make sure they don't have socket limitation. We encountered this on a server that did not allow parallel downloads, multiple socket downloads and multipoint downloads for the same file coming from the same requester. Basically unless you did a 1:1 download with no splitting to accelerate download or downloading multiple copies to speed up download and so on (think DownThemAll paradigm) it would corrupt the stream since it would restart it with each request. Depending on the type of server and the knowledge of the admin, they can set those switches unless they are worried about bandwidth and leeching.
