Unrelated to FlashGot.
Disable FlashGot.
Try your Youtube test.
Does the problem persist?
Firefox 12, huh.

This problem is related to Flashgot almost for sure, it happens only with FlashGot enable and only with the last version (1.5.5.2).

Example URL?
How do you tell the video is still loading, exactly (Wireshark, devtools, Httpfox or what?)

Re: Still loading YouTube pages
I can confirm this for FlashGot 1.5.5.2 on SeaMonkey 2.0.14 (Gecko < 2.0). The browser may even load a YouTube video that isn't played (but blocked by Flashblock). It does not happen with FlashGot 1.5.5.1.

Re: Still loading YouTube pages
It "sniffs" every alternate format available for the video in that page by sending a HEAD request which returns just the HTTP headers (a few bytes) basically telling the content type and the size of the movie, but it doesn't download any actual stream data.Dalai wrote:I can confirm this for FlashGot 1.5.5.2 on SeaMonkey 2.0.14 (Gecko < 2.0). Have you evidence of the contrary?

Evidence of what? That it doesn't happen with the previous version (1.5.5.1)?Giorgio Maone wrote:Have you evidence of the contrary?
I will describe what I've seen on my systems:
I'm using a fli4l router (Linux based system designed for ISDN and DSL routing) which brings a little helper program called imonc that shows the traffic on the internet line in real time. I can see the traffic generated by the browser using FlashGot 1.5.5.2 almost every time I load a YouTube page in SeaMonkey 2.0.14, Firefox 3.5.19 and Firefox 10.0.12 (tested the last two a few minutes ago). I don't know what the browser is loading from the YouTube page (and honestly I don't care), but because it doesn't happen with FlashGot 1.5.5.1 it must be related to this addon. I don't know if it is caused by this addon but maybe it's triggered by it.
To sum up:
- FlashGot 1.5.5.2 causes the browser to load something from a YouTube page as soon as it is loaded (even if Flashblock blocks the video itself)
- FlashGot 1.5.5.1 doesn't have this problem
- I can reproduce this on SeaMonkey 2.0.14, Firefox 3.5.19 and Firefox 10.0.12, unfortunately not reliably though (I know that all of these browser versions aren't supported anymore but I don't care right now)
- I don't know if it's an incompatibility to another addon or something like that. One of the browsers I use (SeaMonkey 2.0.14) has only 4 addons: Adblock Plus, Flashblock, FlashGot and Googlebar (not the one from Google), so there's not much to experiment with.

Re: Still loading YouTube pages
Of the traffic being generated by the movie being actually downloaded.Dalai wrote:Evidence of what?Giorgio Maone wrote:Have you evidence of the contrary?
I told you that a new feature (introduced in 1.5.5.2) preloads metadata (especially the size) of all the multiple resolutions and formats for a certain movie, even if the player is blocked e.g. with FlashBlock or NoScript.
Therefore a traffic of a few hundreds of bytes, or even kilobytes is totally expected.
Otherwise, if you've got evidence that megabytes of data are downloaded even if the movie has not been started or the page has been closed, then we've got a real issue.

Version 1.5.5.1 already does this, doesn't it?Giorgio Maone wrote:I told you that a new feature (introduced in 1.5.5.2) preloads metadata (especially the size) of all the multiple resolutions and formats for a certain movie, even if the player is blocked e.g. with FlashBlock or NoScript.
I'm aware of that.Giorgio Maone wrote:Therefore a traffic of a few hundreds of bytes, or even kilobytes is totally expected.
Yes, that's exactly what I meant. The tool mentioned above (imonc) shows the internet connection at full capacity if the problem occurs (BTW this is a problem on a DSL 2 MBit/s connectionGiorgio Maone wrote:Otherwise, if you've got evidence that megabytes of data are downloaded even if the movie has not been started or the page has been closed, then we've got a real issue.

I can now confirm that - if it happens - it is the video itself being loaded; I checked the files in the browser cache with Total Commander's Lister and in the files I can clearly see contents of typical MP4/FLV files (cleared the cache directory before starting the browser of course).

Hi,
are there any news on this issue? Version 1.5.5.3 shows the problem as well. BTW: the YouTube content detection is broken again on Gecko < 2.0.

Re: Still loading YouTube pages
I've found the culprit of the main issue in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=598304 and will work around it in next dev build.
Investigating the Gecko < 2 regression, thank you.

Hi there,
the issue is still present in version 1.5.5.4, at least while using Firefox 3.x or SeaMonkey 2.0.x or Firefox 10 ESR. I was not able to reproduce it on Firefox 17 ESR though.

Re: Still loading YouTube pages
I can confirm the issue is still present with 1.5.5.4 and Firefox 10.0.11 on Linux.
Even after closing all Youtube tabs in the browser, lots of connections to youtube are kept open in the background, and keep downloading data using all available bandwidth.
The only way to stop them is to close the browser altogether.
Let me know if I can help debugging in any way, and thanks for working on this!!!

Is there any specific valid reason why you're sticking with an obsolete (and unsafe) Firefox version?frizzolo wrote:I can confirm the issue is still present with 1.5.5.4 and Firefox 10.0.11 on Linux.
