UPDATE/EDIT
:? I STILL SEE PROBLEMS WITH NoScript DISABLED, WHATEVER THE PROBLEM IT SEEMS I AM INCORRECT IN ATTRIBUTING IT TO NO SCRIPT

I seem to have started having problems. Sometimes high CPU, at one point maxing out, more ususally now (120/4)% but drops to say (10<50/4)% with ns disabled . Very slowpage reloaded. For instance the mozilla forums normally reload in under a second but taking 8-25 seconds !

I did wonder is it because of NoScript interacting with something else
  • firebug I only have that on anyway when investigating something, and triedwith that enabled & disabled
  • Colusion that is a mozilla addon for tracking linked sites but I disabled that
I do realise To test this properly I will need to try in a clean profile with just NoScript installed.
(I have tried it with NS as the only active extension, and with no activeplugins.)
See if I can then recreate the problem. I guess there will be some additional factor.
This forum is not flooded with posts, neither is the Firefox support forum. Whatever the problem it is probably not affecting anything like all users.
For now I have disabled NoScript.

I have a suspicion NS is impacting on my download speeds, whilst not affecting streaming ?!

Whatever is happening and why I am not yet sure, other than to say problems disapear with NS disabled.

Hi Bob,

I note you are apparently only on Firefox 17. It is probably worth updating that. The current release is fx19 with fx20 due out any day now. It is in fact unusual Firefox has not auto updated.
  • Are you using ESR or deliberatly blocking updates?

If someone is going to try to help you I imagine it would be good to know which sites are affected.

What happens if you use this informactionforum as the only tab open, and have all extensions and plugins disabled ?
  • I imagine in the above situation you do not get 100% cpu
  • When do you get 100% CPU are you able to suggest simple steps to reproduce this situation
  • brief details of the XP machine how many cores and processor speed for example
  • what sort of CPU use do you get in a similar situation with NS disabled

I'm running a dual core 3.2 GHz Phenom II x2 550 processor with max ram under 32bit XP. I'm still running FF 17 because of compatibility issues with some plugins i don't want to do without and can't find replacements for (same reason I'm still using XP on this machine). the problem doesn't happen on my other 2 machines, but FF is up to date on those and they're running win7 64.

as far as the tabs running, I've tried a single tab here and it still runs at 100% on one core. the only thing that helped was disabling NS completely. This is my main machine and there's usually a lot running at once but it's never been a problem.

Firefox needs few resources, and your machine certainly should not be running at 100% CPU on a simple forum. If your prolbem is definitely NoScript related then others will be more knowledgeable and better albe to help you. My comments are
  1. Clean Profile
It is worth ruling out Firefox problems by creating a new clean additional profile and trying that with and without NoScript. Something I admitted I should have done before posting.
  2. Security & other Software
What else may be interacting with NoScript ? Especially if it is newly upgraded. Does any other security related software recognise NoScript as friendly or is it trying to block NoScript
  3. Malware
Lacking any other good explanation of the problem possily itis worth considering malware as the cause. It seems conceivable that NoScript could interact with malware. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diag ... or_malware
You probably would be better off using current Firefox releases, because most extensions are compatible or have equivalents that are. With no other obvious cause you probably also need to investigate the possibility that your problem is malware related.

I do not know how you are checking CPU usage, probably with Task Manager. You will need to determine exactly which process or processes are eating up CPU.
My XP machines are mothballed. From what I recall you could find sysinternals better for that http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/default Note they have there own support, documentation and forum.

I have edited my initial post, as it no longer seems that my problem is caused by NoScript. My problem may be intermittent, and any effect from disabling NoScript is temporary. My NoScript had only recently updated, and was just about the only thing additional running on Firefox , but I guess I was jumping to conclusions too early.

well, this is odd. about 5 minutes after my last post, i decided to take a break and get something to eat. i come back to the computer about 20 minutes later to find FF had crashed while idle. when i restarted it the problem was gone, and hasn't returned. Also, nothing i can think to do makes FF go over 11-12 % usage. who knows, maybe it was a gremlin.

while the problem has occurring, i tried the clean profile with only NS and disabled my AV, but that didn't help. i monitored usage with Sysinternals process explorer.

Thanks for the help.

Did you submit the crash to Mozilla?
What was the crash report number (about:crashes) ?
