Suggestion for dealing with ads

Why not consider what Mike Bombich has done on Carbon Copy Cloner. He started displaying banner ads when the app is running because he needs the revenue to keep up the site. Quite understandable. But if you click on "I paid" when asked to consider donating, that disables the ads. It's on the honor system, since you don't actually have to have donated in order to click "I paid." You could ask him directly how it's working out, but I haven't heard any more fuss about it since it started well over a year ago.
