[RESOLVED] Facebook problem

[NeedHelp!]

Hello, I've been using NoScript for about 3 months now and really appreciate it.However, 2 days ago, a problem I never encountered before showed up while trying to access Facebook. I simply can't see the site (newsfeed or profile) unless I authorize "akamaihd.net". (See picture below) Should I allow it ?

Google is your friend.

If you search for Akamai, you'll find that it is a content delivery network. Facebook has been using them for a while now to help provide their content. Lots of sites do. Not surprising, for a website with that much traffic.

Whether you trust them is up to you, but as you say, Facebook won't work without them any more. Personally, I consider them safe enough.

Interesting.. I have this EXACT same problem and it started Dec 4th as well. What's funny is, I use my friend's computer to login into Facebook and he has two separate accounts and they both work just fine with akamaidh.net blocked. I however.. have the same problem as the original poster and it will only work if I allow it. It goes right back to not working the moment I revoke temporary permissions. My friend also has NoScript on his Firefox browser. The problem only happens with my account.

@ Needhelp and SamanthaX, please see NoScript Quick Start Guide, and if you don't want to read the whole thing (it's very helpful), search for "akamai".

The domain name "akamaihd" appears to be a new variant, intended for mobile devices and for high-definition (HD):

Also, in my humble opinion only, https://startpage.com is a far better friend than Google. Compare the privacy policies.

Appreciate the help, Tom. All I have to do is allow permissions for it.. the issue is: using the SAME computer, SAME browser, SAME NoScript add-on, my friend can log into his TWO accounts just fine.. for some reason, only my account is affected by this. I find that extremely odd.

You're quite welcome. To know why the difference, we'd have to compare all of the settings, configurations, permissions, in NoScript, possibly in Firefox and perhaps in other add-ons, between you and your friend. But so long as your problem is solved, probably not worth the time to figure out why.

Even that might not be enough; Facebook might be showing different things to different people, based on what is being included in their news feed. Eg if they've only rolled out akamaihd to certain countries, and you have friends in those countries, then you might get content served from akamaihd, while another account might not. There's really no telling what Facebook will do; they roll out changes whenever and however they please.

What I can say is that akamaihd on Facebook is normal, and allowing it is probably safer than allowing facebook.com itself...

I go to his house, use his computer, use the same browser (same setting as he does). The ONLY difference.. is that I'm signing in.

Now, he has to do the same for ONE of his accounts. Something about this just doesn't seem right.

Please see my earlier comment. It makes sense that Facebook would load different sites for different accounts depending on what content those accounts link to (friend list, news feed, apps).
