cannot get axel to use more than 4 connections

I was trying to get axel to use more than 4 connections. Eventually, I ended up looking at the source code and it seems that setting flashgot.dmsopts.Axel.connections in about:config to an integer value should work. But I always get 4 connections only, where from the command lines I can run axel with e.g. 60 conections and it uses them.
