I clicked an email link to Time Magazine:

Code: Select all

time dot chtah dot net/a/hBPlYzrBASRffB7 ... /time90-26
This gives me a blank, dark gray page with no apparent contents.

Are there suggestions for getting to these sites?

Thanks.

Don.

I suggest not going to those "chtah" sites. The service www.mywot.com gives it a very poor reputation, including spam and phishing attacks for PayPal information.

That link is not Time Magazine. That would be simply:

Code: Select all

http://www.time.com/time/
I expect someone was attempting to lure you into an evil site.
I sanitized your link a little, so that users won't be able to copy/paste/go, and search engines would not see it and give credit to it.

Please do not click links in e-mails, even from trusted sources, without observing the destination in the lower left when you hover the mouse pointer over it. Or R-click, "copy link location", and paste it into a text-only document like Notepad. Then you can check to see if it is the real one (for example, by looking it up in a search engine such as https://startpage.com).

The reason for vetting trusted sources is that your friend's computer may have been infected, and is sending out spam without the user's knowledge.
Please contact whoever sent you that link, and ask them to have their machine checked for malware.

Hi Tom T.,

Thanks for your input. I receive a weekly newsletter from TIME at time dot chtah dot com, containing ten stories of interest each week. AFAIK they come from Time Magazine, more or less directly, and I have been following their links since at least January of this year.

I HAD THOUGHT that Time Magazine, whatever a person may think of them journalistically, wouldn't be sending us to suspect sites. I'm wrong about that? Never saw THAT ONE coming.

What do you suggest, short of not linking to the stories, if there is any prudent course of action other than abstention?

Don.

I just now went to their actual home page, as per previous post, and clicked "Newsletter" at the bottom. It took me to a page with domain:

Code: Select all

http://ebm.cheetahmail.com/.....
Note the similarity between "cheetahmail" and "chtah".

Not being a subscriber, I don't know whether the actual stories would come from the cheetahmail domain or the shortened chtah.
However, I can visualize a scam where someone buys the chtah.com domain, to look like Time's newsletter domain, then sends stories -- some legitimate, and a few with links to a malware site.

So the question is: How did you get on this list in the first place? Did you do it through the subscription page at time.com, as I started to do?
If not, we need to look into where and how you originally got on the list.

When you get the e-mails, who is the sender? (full email address, not the "name")
Can you "show full headers" in your e-mail, and find the sender's IP address? (which may be spoofed, if from an evildoer)
