Persistent difficulty with gmail, google search

In the last few weeks I've on-again, off-again difficulty accessing gmail and google search using Firefox with NoScript active (and no corresponding problems using Safari on the same laptop). Sometimes this takes the form of gmail/google.com simply not loading at all, but never quite reaching the point of hitting an error page; other times gmail might load, but then certain icon boxes are blank (though clicking on them will still archive/delete/etc. if I'm brave enough to try) and the background is neutral instead of displaying the usual image of pebbles. I've also noticed in the latter case that the little status image in the url bar will continue to swirl even after gmail has presumably finished loading. When I go to my white list under NoScript Options, gmail.com and gstatic.com are permanently allowed, and google.com and googleapis.com have temporary permissions.
I haven't had much luck searching this support forum for users having similar issues; can anyone suggest where I should start in terms of trouble-shooting this? It's gone from temporary 'bother-time-to-switch-between-browsers-again' annoyance to actively concerning.
