unable to get several sites to work

I am unable to get a number of websites to work correctly.

Specifically:
1. Adf.ly never goes past "please wait". I never see the 5 second count down, and I have to view source -> search for the /go/ string, and manually copy/paste to get the files behind the ad.

2. Imgur never uploads pictures. It always stays on "waiting" after I select files to upload.

After reading stuff on the blog here, and looking at surrogate scripts, I checked about:config for "surr", and saw nothing. I did a remove, and then re-install. Now I can see the surrogate scripts, but neither adf.ly nor imgur work.

I can say "allow all this page" until there is nothing left to allow. Still does not work.

If I say "permit scripts globally", then it works.

The only relevant config option I can think of is "apply these restrictions to whitelisted sites as well". When I turn that off, imgur works. But then, YouTube (and other sites) have this annoying "Start playing videos as soon as the page loads, because we'll never be a background tab" assumption. And, this doesn't solve adf.ly.

Check the Blocked Objects submenu. Probably there's Flash or IFRAME being blocked. Ordinarily you'd see a placeholder on the page, but sometimes it's just not visible.

Checked that.

It's annoying that I have to enable those every time when that happens.
And, on my mother's PC using the current firefox (again, I'm on ESR/FF 10), this does not happen -- hers works just fine.

And, it does not solve these -- as I said, both adf.ly and imgur keep causing me problems. Other sites do as well (not often, but I'll update this next time I run into this).

Ok, here's one from today:

http://adf.ly/DBLVw

It's a mod addon for Minecraft.

On my mother's PC, with noscript, it does a 5 second countdown, and then goes to "skip ad".

On my mac, no matter what I do, no matter what I turn on, permit, etc, it never begins the countdown or displays "skip ad".

If you have Ghostery or Adblock Plus, they have a filter that kills a special cookie they set and that's why its not working. If you run a profile with JUST NoScript, it works fine, otherwise you get this message "Please enable Cookies in your browser."

Oh, great. How do I disable those? (I have both).

(And why did Firefox not bother reloading this site when I have quit and restarted it at least 10 times since wednesday? I figured it would at least check the site to see if an update had happened once a day.)

To clarify: I want both programs. I just want to disable the "kill the cookie" behavior.

With Ghostery, you can go to settings and look at the blocking options, there are 3 tabs, beginning with 3pes, and the next one is cookies, click on the second tab uncheck the cookies and save. That's the easy one. With ABP, if you are using a subscribed list, which my money says you are, you can't control it that easily. What you need to do is go to the page, open blockable elements, find the ones in red and find out which one is for the tracking engine that is trying to set the cookie and add an except for just that domain and it will stop screwing with it. Not the easiest things to do, but doable. Let me know how you do.

Ok. Step 1: Ghostry: Whitelisted adf.ly

Step 2: Adblock Plus: Hmm... two things. One is apparently an image, and the other is ... I'm guessing the cookie deal. OK, try turning them on.

Nope.

Hmm.

Ghostry: Disable (the pause/play button).

ICCK, that's the adf.ly ads? "Your download will begin in a moment", a "Problems? Click here", and then after a few seconds, an image that looks just like the official Windows-brand windows.

No wonder people complain about that. Heck, how does that even get past the lawyers in the USA? Deliberately misleading someone by impersonating the look / copyright of the design of the operating system? If Apple can patent rounded corners, why can't microsoft file a copyright lawsuit at a minimum for stopping that bleep.

Meanwhile, lets try to keep the cookie and stop the ad. Re-enabling adblock ...

Aha! So it will differ if you use EasyList or FanBoy. But basically, on FanBoy, there's a filter for a 3market frame. That's the one that has the ad.

Keep that one blocked, enable the other, whitelist on ghostry, and I see the countdown followed by skip ad. While I don't like the countdown, that's good enough.

I don't use Fanboy list or recommend it despite VP pushing it. Because he not only blocks ads, images, scripts, but also his own subjective "annoyances" as well which are often necessary to some people, even he doesn't like them. So stick with EasyList if you must, its lesser of two evils, as it tends to overreach a bit less.

Hello!

I'm having the EXACT same problem and I have no idea what to do. Can anyone help with this? I have the latest firefox and Windows 7, it worked fine and all of a sudden adfly and linkbucks started to do this. I don't get the countdown. I've cleaned the history, cache and cookies and nothing changed. What else should I do?

I've remembered something. This started after a message asking if I really want to leave the page begun to show in the linkbucks, adf.ly pages, before that message it was working.

Do you have Adblock Plus and/or ghostery? If so, have you followed the instructions already given in this thread?

No, I don't, at least as far as I know I don't have any of those, I've never installed them. Is there anywhere I can check besides control panel to make sure I don't have them?

Addons Manager, Ctrl+Shift+A.
