That answers my enquiring mind. How do I type things without it being parsed?

Unfortunately since its a simple "there is the word" therefore "insert this" pattern check being done, not much you can do. The only thing would be to just remove automatic hyperlinking for that post by checking "do not automatically parse urls" and then it will not show up in the end result. Otherwise, can't think of any other way right now.

Then why didn't it happen when I typed the word "profile" three times in a row in my previous post?

They link to the resource ONLY when the shortcut is wrapped in braces.

You guys seem to be talking about typing URLs, which is a completely different issue. Of course URLs will show as URLs, although there was an issue with longer ones being broken by truncation, which turned out to be a PHP issue. The cure was to use the actual URL tags.

OP has dome something, like create shortcut keys or always using shortcuts for keywords, that causes the parsing. Those shortcuts were created *for the convenience of Moderators*. I suggested to Giorgio that others be allowed to use them, but that doesn't mean that you *must* use them. Just type the [expletive deleted] word in plain text, without any tags at all, and *nothing* will parse, except for those that are in fact URLs.

I challenge either of you to give me an example that is not a URL or shortcut, and which changes automatically from the plain text as typed.

Probably because the term is so common, he didn't include it. However, he and I use a script that often does include it, when I forget to disable it, you'll find my posts having every freakin profile converted. I let it go because too much trouble to deal with it. I have been meaning to edit the script to only do one instance when I get around to it.

I swear whenever I type profile [the word profile without any brackets or braces] the URL BBcode automatically inserts itself. It as if anybody types the BBcode in themselves and has the word profile [again I typed that with no symbols around it] that points to the linked page. The word about:config is another one but that is one that does not surprise me. I have never used the braces function as of yet but if I need them I will use them. Interestingly, I must exit the edit field then re-enter it in order for the BBcodes to be inserted. Not sure why but that is how it happens.

Do you have the GreaseMonkey script called "Forum Helper" installed? Because you are right, that is not the default behavior intended.

Oh yes, now that you mention it I do. I should really uninstall that thing. I used it for something long ago and now I understand its intended purpose.

Glad we go that crisis solved. :)

As mentioned, by default, no shortcut keys are parsed unless wrapped in braces. :geek:

And I use my own shortened version of "profile" shortcut, which is "prof" in braces, to save three keystrokes. Like this: profile :ugeek:

Glad could solve that for you, thought I recognized the behavior.
