First, I am sorry you are having problems, Second, I am glad my solution helps, and finally, I think you need to find out the root of what is causing it in your environment. It could be a single rogue theme or extension that you installed that is hurting you. In general we all have tons of extensions and it works just fine. Occasionally, there are conflicts caused by less experienced developers. It is unfortunate but don't give up on it just because of that.

Have you tried Standard Diagnostic, simply put, you will have to enable your extensions one at a time until you encounter the error and then you know which one is causing it and then you can narrow down if its done by itself or in conjunction with a conflict with another extension you had previously enabled. Its a pain, for sure but then anything worth doing would be.

The only extension i have running is Noscript.

I am currently running with only Noscript enabled, i've disabled all plug-ins, brand new profile, deleted the extension files from this brand new profile before coming here. Still no icon.

Is my windows just bugged?

Yes I have. That's the first thing I did after the icon first disappeared.

I use Symantec Antivirus Version 10.2.0.276 and I'm not sandboxed.

Maybe a permissions issue?
Does creating a different user and installing with it change anything?

Yes, I have deleted all user accounts with the user agent. Then checked the extensions and registry to make sure nothing is there. Then made a new user account, reinstalled NS and still no icon.

I'm going to try reinstalling firefox after i remove all the associated files again.

Do you possibly have multiple installations of Firefox on your system. Usually happens when you install a regular release and maybe later a pending beta release and they do not overlap each other, they are somewhat separate and you might be accessing an installation that is no longer deemed default and so any all installs, changes or anything are under the other installation. Might be worth checking, something similar to this happened to someone I was supporting and this was the culprit. Once they uninstalled _ALL_ installations and cleaned up and reverted to ONE, then it worked fine. Just thinking out loud here, worth looking at it since nothing else is working.

Go to C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Windows Presentation Foundation\DotNetAssistantExtension in Windows Explorer and delete everything in that folder but keep the folder name.

Ok but there are those, including myself, who have everything in that folder and then some and have no issue. So although I am glad it worked for you, it should not be considered a blanket solution since many have it without issue with NS, plus NS doesn't use anything that would affect that component anyway, other than the generic blocking it provides to the active contents possibly in a page.

Okay... I almost don't want to respond in case I jynx myself... but here goes.

My issue with icon being gone is fixed, and here's what I did.

I updated windows vista fully up to today's updates. I then uninstalled firefox and made sure i deleted all the folders that read "Mozilla"(including the ones for thunderbird.) Then I restarted the computer and did a clean install of firefox 3.5.3.

Once I loaded up firefox, windows .net thing was in the extensions list already. I disabled the extension, restarted firefox and installed NS. After installation was done, I restarted firefox again, and now the icon is back. I even tried closing firefox and reopening it and the icon remains visible.

So with any luck, upon the next reboot the icon will still be there!

Yup, that .net thingy is a known problem. Here's three more things you can do to help prevent further problems. I did them all myself, the first two quite a while ago.
1) Completely remove the .net thingy. Use Method 2 from here:

2) Ensure Windows Automatic Updates doesn't put it back by doing the following:
- Launch Microsoft Update from the Start Menu
- Press the Custom button on its Welcome screen.
- If Update to .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 for the .NET Framework Assistant 1.0 x86(KB963707) is listed under High-priority updates, then uncheck it, click on it to expand the entry, and check Don't show this update again .

3) Update to Fx 3.5.5. It has some bug fixes and patches some known, published vulnerabilities. Help->Check for Updates.

I have the .net "thingy" installed (its disabled in fx) and so update will not enable it again. It has never been an issue and I never even had to remove it and I have been using NS for a VERY long time. I think its more likely the profile was corrupted and the permissions messed up, hence why a clean re-install fixed it. You could have saved your places.sqlite file (your bookmarks) and sacrifice everything else by just deleting the "Mozilla" folder from %appdata% and it would clean start you with a new profile without having to reinstall everything (also delete the Mozilla folder under "Local" which holds extended cache files).

I am glad it worked for you though but as easy as it may be to blame something that many hate, its nice to try and figure out the real issue than to take the easy way out. The unfortunate bandwagon mentality in OS community makes it hard to actually nail down the real problem sometimes and later it gets fixed not because the problem was what has been blamed but rather some bug fix took care of it and no one ever bothered making the connection. Its like lazy old cops making the assumption they have a suspect and not looking at anyone else and putting someone else in jail instead; yeah the "criminal" is in jail but is the real one? The more of their buddies say, yeah I think his guilty, the more it seals the deal.

HP's Smart Web Printing is another conflicting plug-in/extension that causes the NoScript status bar icon to disappear. Disable or delete it and NoScript function is restored. It is bundled with the Windows 7 version of Officejet drivers.

Yep, it could very well be a problem with Mozilla config files. I always have windows update enabled and have it set to auto update, and this has been the only time since I've installed vista in which something of Microsoft's caused me a problem. I'm just glad it's fixed as I'm very much spoiled by NS and don't know which site is safe or not anymore

On a side note... So far in a little over 2 years, Vista has crashed twice. That's pretty good hehe.
