1. They are the only way for users who don't use JDownloader to automate the downloading and skip Rapidshare's new waiting strategies

Reading out the ChangeLog of FlashGot I was heading to this:

Now there's no wonder on what's causing this trouble.
It says that it's optional but no option to disable it.

I had just installed the old version 1.2.2 and it works as it should without annoying pop ups.

In 1.2.2.1 you can disable it from about:config, as explained in the first page of this thread.
In 1.2.3rc you can disable it by simply choosing "No" on the first popup after unchecking "Always ask...".

So yes, it's optional, and for most users it's a sensible default.

I perfectly understand Azetec's frustration, which is my own, as well as several (possibly) millions of other people who use FlashGot regularly to download from rapidshare via their separate download manager.
I believe that Giorgio has done a stellar job with FlashGot, until now. Given the immense popularity and widespread use of his Firefox add-on, he should really jump straight into a bugfix release, instead of waiting for waves upon waves of new members (like me) to register on this support board to complain and vent out their frustration. FlashGot has always worked for me, but it has been a few days since i updated to the latest stable release and honestly, it has been nothing but a BIG pain in the ass to use Firefox to send rapidshare links to my download manager (i use Flashget classic version). There is always this extremely annoying pop-up that seems to act like a deterrence to prevent rapidshare premium users from using FlashGot. Luckily, i was able to find what i was looking on the first few clicks around this forum, and i have already installed the rc2 dev build which fixed this problem. (the pop-up will show up again, but you just uncheck the option and select No and there will be no more pop-up displayed).

To Giorgio: Please do not wait any longer and consider this a critical case where the urgent release the 1.2.3 version is absolutely necessary, as i am sure that many many many people are having huge troubles with this add-on of yours. rapidshare is the most popular file hosting in the world, so i believe it should be a priority to release the rc2 dev build as 1.2.3 as soon as possible, without waiting any longer for other minor features to be added.

Unless you're using JDownloader (which has its own logic to cope with RS links), all you need to do is log into your Rapid PRO account from Firefox once in a lifetime (the cookie has a 1 week expiration time, if you don't download anything).
Generally speaking, if you've got a cookie-capable download manager like FlashGet, FDM or Orbit, you don't need to store your credentials there, because FlashGot sends your login cookie.

How does it relate to a Free user?
I understood how to work the "old RS with FlashGot, but am not sure with the current.
(I've only looked briefly <& unsuccessfully> at a couple RS links, but given their current implementation, I may never look at one again.)

Yes it does.

There have been 2 changes, one on Rapidshare's side (they switched from a straightforward POST implementation to a convoluted AJAX one) and one in FlashGot to counter-react: now FlashGot tries to "wait" and "retry" on behalf of the free user.
This means that the first link you try to download in a day gets to your download manager in 30 seconds on average, while the following may be deferred of 15 minutes or more, and cannot be downloaded while another RS download is running anyway, but once you grab them with FlashGot they will be taken care of automatically at least until you close the browser.

The only users who may have disadvantages of this new setup are JDownloader's ones, because JDownloader has its own mechanism to "wait & retry".
However, you can entirely skip FlashGot's preprocessing by saying "No" to the prompt, and if this is your ultimate choice (as it will probably be for Pro & JDownloader users), unchecking the "Always ask..." checkbox.

Perfect! That worked for me - logged into Rapidshare, went to settings, there's a switch for this now.
