As for the issue I solved it by switching to the ESR (Extended Support Release) channel.

All the security updates of the RC (Release Channel) without the hassle of the constant changes to the interface and theme/addon issues.

For those with the problems, if FF 17 worked well for you'd I'd consider going to the ESR channel. Firefox 17.0.3 ESR is based on Firefox 17, and will stay that way until somewhere around Firefox 24 or so, but with all the security updates that the RC gets.

Been on it for a day and haven't had the issue yet. In fact I can't even duplicate the issue with the above steps like I could on 18 or 19.

I tested it on the test computer by completely wiping out Firefox, including any leftover folders and reg entries. Then installed the ESR, went straight to addons and installed the latest noscript. Everything works fine and I couldn't duplicate the menu problem.

On my system I backed up everything, including exporting bookmarks and exporting settings for any addons that have that option. Then I uninstalled 18, but told the uninstaller to keep my settings. Installed the 17.0.3 ESR and everything looks/works identical. The only way I'd know I was on ESR instead of RC is looking at Help/About.

All my settings stayed the same and I no longer have the noscript menu problem. I can't even duplicate the issue anymore.


This doesn't solve the issue until Mozilla figures out what they changed that is causing the issue, but those with the problem have an option for now.

Just a quick update.
it's been about a week and not a single menu problem, so 17 ESR seems to be the way to go.

Since I have a way to reproduce the problem, I'll keep tabs on this and when/if it gets fixed, I'll test it out on the test system to see.

Tried Firefox 20 on the test system and the problem still persists and is easily reproducible.
Pure update from 19, nothing else tweaked or added.
Default install only Noscript installed.

17.05 ESR still good no problems.

Upgraded to Firefox 21 and this problem still occurs. I've noticed it's not strictly related to NoScript, it does occur from time to time with other menus in Firefox. I just notice it more in NoScript since I use it more often than other menus in Firefox.

I did a bit more experimenting and found a possible workaround that seems to fix this. I was using an "Aero" theme on my computer, and I switched it to a "Basic" theme. You don't get all of the fancy transparency effects, but it seems to have solved my problem with menus in Firefox (several hours in, and not a single problem). I suspect there is some incompatibility with Firefox and certain graphics drivers/cards that causes this problem when Aero is enabled.

I've never really cared for all of the Aero effects so I think this solution will work fine with me, others might not like having to disable Aero themes.

Disabling Aero seems to fix it, yeah. Not sure about graphics cards/drivers, though it could be possible. I've got a 9600 GT with the latest drivers and fully updated Windows 7 yet it keeps happening to me. A friend with a 460 card with also latest drivers and fully updated Windows 7 never had this problem, and he never had Aero off either. Whatever it's causing it, it's down to Mozilla to figure out and fix it.

Got a request for a mozregression check by Loic, however it's not possible for me to run mozregression currently (and most likely anytime in the near future), if someone from here who's experiencing it could do that it should help a lot.
