Why in the world is the status bar being removed from firefox in the first place?

To do it the Google Chrome way and reduce the size of the interface.

Well, why remove it entirely? Why not leave it as an option, and for add-on compatbility's sake?

Well, they wanted to remove the status messages in the first place:

That logic... it's just silly.

For one- whether or not a feature is "needed" does not say whether or not it is *desired* - hence why the feature requested in this thread was restored.
Second, the status bar is extremely helpful to more adept users. When you mouse over a link for instance, the true destination of the link is shown in the status bar- this makes it all the more easy to identify phishing attempts, especially in email, where scammers will have a link that looks like a plain URL but actually goes somewhere completely different.

It just sounds to me like they're just trying to dumb things down to remain attractive against simplified browsers like chrome. What software creators view as what novice users will appriciate is being more and more favored over what is beneficial to advanced users.

The web is commerce.
Users are the product these days and advertising is the customer.
Mobile is where most development is concentrated, and mobile interfaces are simplified icon-pointy for small displays.
Firefox is a commercial concern and is driven to concentrate on icon style mobile interface development.
Why would they want to buck the system for the minority of 'adept' users of desktops?

There will be an extension for those of us who actually want real-time feedback.
That is, of course, as long as Firefox Corp allows full monkey-patching capacity to remain.

I use the mozilla status bar to moniter status, required because of the long-standing Firefox bug which prevents the status going to 'done' after downloading variable-length content. I assume that they intend to replace the messages with some kind of dynamic icon which is meaningless in every supported language, but I don't think that is an improvement.

There is a law of human interface called Fitts' Law which states that speed of target acquisition (landing a mouse pointer on it) is based on proximity to the target, and size of the target. Larger target is easier to hit, so it's faster. If the real estate is not otherwise in use, I'm gonna enable the largest target I can! Thanks for putting it back in, and especially to the link to this forum on the update page.

This is the best intro I can give you, it's how I learned of Fitts' Law. Bruce Tognazzini was an early Apple employee, and he has some very keen insights into human-machine interaction.

Thats the most valuable feature of the status bar message.
You don't have to click the small noscript icon in the statusbar too enable some of the scripts, but can click on the whole message.
