For some (very strange) reason, if you've got a version installed which is not on AMO, you don't get any automatic AMO update.
Or, I believe to recall from a previous similar issue, rather than not getting any update, you're treated as you were in the stable channel, even though the version number you've got uses the beta channel convention (which makes slightly more sense).
At any rate, I've just uploaded 2.5.7rc1. Could you check whether this actually fixes the problem?
Giorgio, thank you for another rapid fix. :)
I can confirm that a test profile which was 'stuck on 2.5.7rc1' has now been Updated, to 2.5.7rc4, using the normal method.
I have also Updated other profiles (from 2.5.7rc3 to 2.5.7rc4) using the normal method.

Before you posted I also thought that 2.5.7rc1 might have accidentally 'become a stable channel version'.
Like the situation in June 2011
(only on that occasion it was the opposite way round: 'stable was switched to dev /rc /beta').
Stable 2.1.1.1 Auto Updates To Beta 2.1.1.2rc1

All is back to normal.

Thank you Giorgio,
