extend NS to include image & cookies control

Post by RadoQ »

Hi, I've been forced to upgrade FF and with it NS recently.
I've noticed a huge improvement in usability with NS since then, thanks for that progress!!! 8-D

For quite some time I'm using separate plugins to control cookies & images for my sites.
Mostly I run totally protected through the net (lynx-mode), and when I want the full features of a site, I enable all what's needed to make it work properly.
Now I have to touch 3 interfaces to achieve that.

Could you include support for cookies & images in the NS interface?
Both might not fall in the security area features (privacy != security?), but if you can't include them for policy/ strategy reasons, can you provide a "privacy control center" variant of NS with those included?
Disabling images by default also speeds up plowing through the links until the final destination; on the way till there I usually don't need the images, so it also saves wasted bandwidth.

Sounds like NoScript is not the right tool for you. You might consider µMatrix.

If you are really using Firefox 43, the last µMatrix version available to you is 1.1.0.

Lol, sorry, no, that's a leftover from experimenting with about:config. :-)

Thank you for pointing me to the alternative.
Wow, from reading its desc. & examples it really sounds to have _all_ what I need: whole feature set & effective GUI.
But that makes me wonder, so far I've been happy with NS, I only missed images & cookie control.

What will I miss when I switch from NS to µM?

What version of NoScript are you using?

1) µMatrix can't block WebGL on script-whitelisted sites. (WebGL requires scripts anyway, so if you block scripts by default, you are also blocking WebGL by default.)

2) NoScript permissions have the option to apply the specific permission only over HTTPS. µMatrix has no way to do this.

3) µMatrix also doesn't have a XSS filter.

You could solve for (3) by, instead of doing a complete switch to µMatrix, just enable everything in NoScript's Default preset and remove all sites from Per-site Permissions. This lets µMatrix do all the heavy lifting for permissions, NoScript will be completely out of your way unless it detects possible XSS.

Thank you very much for your input, it was ultimatively helpful to give µM a try.
As for keeping NS... I'll have to see how µM performs for my desires.
All the best!

It depends on how important it is to you to be able to block cookies with an extension, but uBlock Origin can be used very well in combination with NoScript. uBlock Origin can do more than just blocking annoyances. In your use case, the advanced mode of uBlock Origin can be used for blocking images and NoScript for the rest. In this combination that would be similar to uMatrix, but it would include the unique features of NoScript and the ad blocking of uBlock Origin.

I would not like to go without being able to allow scripts for https only. That and the possibility to set a different DEFAULT preset for http than for https are advantages of NoScript to all other blockers I am aware of. I would not like to go without that.
