Tremendous slowdown 10.1.7.4 - had to disable

Post by Southern »

I'm running Firefox 59.0.1 and NoScript 10.1.7.4 on a blazing fast Windows 10 pc with a fast internet connection. The last several days I've started having problems with pages taking forever to load and nothing showing up for minutes in the NoScript dropdown box when I click the NoScript icon. I first suspected my internet connection but it tested fine with several testing services. I then tried using the MS Edge browser because Firefox was stuck and I couldn't continue to work. It was fine - no issues at all with the Edge browser. However I'm a devotee of the security and privacy I get with Firefox and a couple add-ons so I started trying to find the problem with Firefox. The problem would only get better briefly if I closed and restarted Firefox or rebooted the pc. My RAM usage is only in the 10% range and CPU usage is usually lower than 5%. I'm not even making a dent in my SSD storage capacity so it's not machine resources.

As part of my troubleshooting I disabled the NoScript add-on and voila. Everything worked fine.
I do have a number of Firefox tabs open (less than a hundred) but I've routinely had 500-1000 open on older versions of Firefox and NoScript and never ran into anything like this.

Anyone else having this issue?

I hope someone can help. I really don't like doing the heavy internet research I'm doing without having NoScript running.
Thanks in advance for any help you may provide.

*Always* check the changelogs BEFORE updating that important software!

Does it happen on a clean profile with just NoScript latest version (10.1.7.5) installed?

Thanks, Georgio and Barbaz for replying.

It's a brand new pc that I've had less than two weeks. Intel Core i7-8700K processor with 32GB RAM
Windows 10 Pro v 1709 (build 16299.309) / Firefox 59.0.1 64-bit / NoScript 10.1.7.5
The old pc completely died and so far I have only brought over some data files to the new one - no old software, no profiles, nothing. The only software that has been installed is MS Office and Firefox. So other than adding a very few Firefox add-ons it's about as clean an environment as you can get.

The slowdown / stop problem occurs after I've been using the browser fairly heavily but I haven't been able to pin down specifics as to what triggers it. It has happened several time but I can't "make" it happen. The issue results in Firefox pages not loading at all or taking minutes (or longer); the Noscript dropdown also takes much longer or only shows the small white conversation box. It does not appear to be connected to specific websites but happens with anything I try to open after the condition is reached. Closing and restarting Firefox doesn't fix it, nor does rebooting. Things begin working normally if I disable NoScript.

I set Firefox to open with my windows and tabs from the previous session. If I close all tabs and restart Firefox, thereby losing my work in progress, it's ok but that's not practical for what I'm doing. Also it doesn't prevent the problem from recurring when I get going again.

Georgio, I updated NoScript form m10.1.7.4 after receiving your link. So far I haven't experienced the issue again. Since I don't know the specifics of what triggers the situation I can't test it on demand but will monitor it and post back what happens over the next few days.
Thank you,
Linda

Hello. Georgio, I just wanted you to know I haven't encountered the slowdown/stop problem since upgrading to NoScript 10.1.7.5. Since I can't produce the symptom on demand, I can't guarantee that the problem is resolved but it seems to be. Thanks very much for your help.
