What's a sane setting for default?

Post by Azijn »

Going on a tangent of https://forums.informaction.com/viewtop ... =7&t=24012 (feel free to merge, if this deserves not its own thread).

So, things that can possibly be blocked are:
script, object, media, frame, font, webgl, fetch and "other"

Now, visiting any page, I'm mostly concerned about two things: privacy-breaking trackers and possibly malware thru advertising or other hosted third-party scripts.

What is a sane setting for default that:
a) will give me a chance at readable content on most (news) pages.
b) gives the highest chance of blocking trackers and malware?

My current default only blocks "script" and "fetch". My trusted trusts everything.

Should I remove more from defaults?
Should I perhaps even remove more from trusted (and add them to custom settings on a page-by-page basis)?

Additionally: If I hit the defaults button (yay, 10.1.5.5) it says:

"ALL the NoScript preferences and site permissions will be reset to their default values immediately.
This action cannot be reverted.
Do you want to continue?"

But what if I copy the policy contents of "debug" setting. I can always paste them and 'revert' that way, right?

This question is somewhat a matter of opinion. Me, I would set Default to allow only "frame" and "other", because I believe that is closest to NoScript Classic behavior.
*Always* check the changelogs BEFORE updating that important software!

Just for your information, I am unticking all boxes for Default, and havent had any issue with any site. Unticking all boxes is more restricted than Default was in Classical NoScript.

The Defaults for the Default preset are:
fetch, frame and other. This are the boxes that come pre checked in a new installation.

What exactly does "other" control?
