[RESOLVED] NoScript 1.9.7 blocks streaming PDF?

Post by Anonymoose »

Great product and this is the first time I've ever had a problem with it. This happens with both Forefox 3.0.11 and 3.012. One financial institution makes statements available online in a PDF format. Clicking on VIEW invokes a servlet that streams the PDF to the browser.

Since updating to 1.9.7 I no longer get PDFs nor prompts for my PDF reader to open/save the PDF. The progress bar goes about 75% and then repeats as if in a loop. Looking at headers I see a GET ~every second with a RC of 200, but it just keeps repeating.

Other sites with "regular" static link PDFs still seem to load fine so I'm thinking it has to do with how they are being streamed to my browser by the servlet (but I'm not a coder and don't know much about that)

If I allow scripts globally, the same behavior occurs. However, if I disable noscript and restart FF, I can see the PDFs

I looked at my config settings to see if anything changed, but nothing jumped out at me that might be causing this.

Thanks

Could you please install HTTPFox and show me its output when it happens.
The best approach would be allowing me to observe the phenomenon directly, but I understand it's kind of a sensitive site...

I'll be happy to do that. I probably can't do it tonight and will probably have to do it tomorrow after work assuming nothing else comes up.

I understand it would be easier to troubleshoot if you could actually touch/see it but I can't figure out how and be comfortable with it. I could probably also do screen shots if that would help. Can I email the HTTPFox results to you instead of posting them here?

Thanks again for your promptness.

Also, could you please check if latest development build 1.9.7.2 helps?

I've registered and you have a PM with the information you requested. The new version did not make a difference. I also found a machine using Noscript 1.9.5 and it works fine.

@justaguy:
Thanks for your HttpFox logs.
Does disabling ABE from NoScript Options|Adanced|ABE change anything?
Does unchecking "Forbid plugins" in NoScript Options|Plugins do?
Do you have "Forbid IFrames" and/or "Forbid Frames" checked? If so, does unchecking them change anything?

Some progess!!!

-Disabling ABE did NOT change anything. So I reanabled the option and went to the next step.

-When I unchecked "Forbid other plugins", the PDF loaded as expected!

-I did not have Forbid iFrames or Forbid Frames checked.

So is unchecking the "Forbid other plugins" option the correct workaround or is this unexpected behavior? I expect that has always been checked before although I admit I don't usually compare or check the options after upgrading to see if they changed. Let me know what you'd like me to do next. BTW, I removed the beta version and am doing testing with NS 1.9.7.7

Thanks

@justaguy:
Your tests could be more meaningful to Giorgio if you repeat them with the latest NoScript version, 1.9.7.84.

No, it's a diagnostic step I asked you to take in order to shed some light upon this issue.
Ideally, you should get a placeholder if you're blocking (or an "Allow..." item in the "Blocked objects" submenu at least) and the PDF directly if you're not, therefore unchecking "Forbid other plugins" should never be necessary.

Please install latest development build 1.9.7.84, try with "Forbid other plugins" checked and if the PDF still doesn't open check if anything is shown in the "Blocked objects" NoScript submenu.

Yeah, I know. My orignal test that I sent a PM on was the beta v1.9.7.8 at that time. When it didn't fix the issue, I went back to the latest GA version and had forgotten about that when running other tests until I was at the end of writing the results.

I installed the latest dev build 1.9.7.86. With "Forbid other plugins" checked, the PDF did not load and the "Get" appears to "loop" as before. I unchecked the option and the PDF loaded as expected.

When looking at the NS submenu, all I see are lines for Forbid <site name>, Allow Scripts Globally, Revoke Temporary Permissions, Make page permissions permanent, Options, About NoScript.

Don't know if this helps, but with further investigation on other machines I found with NS installed, this was not introduced with 1.9.7, but somewhere between 1.9.5 (which worked) and 1.9.6.9 (which does not).

Thanks

It is getting weirder and weirder.
Could you use "Save page as" while the looping is happening, zip the result and mail me it?
