Firefox 55.0.3 crashing on numerous sites w/NoScript

Post by cevettanoScript »

I have a fresh install of Firefox 55.0.3 and have installed the NoScript add-on.

I Iike to run NoScript in scripts-globally-disabled mode (manually allowing certain sites' scripts) but Firefox has crashed about 30 times today since installing NoScript while visiting a variety of sites:

https://www.samplephonics.com/products/ ... ty-modular
https://soundcloud.com
https://clyp.it
http://vstbuzz.com/deals/votox-xs

and a variety of other media-focused sites. Sometimes Firefox crashes on site load, and sometimes it crashes while using media players on the given page.

I've tried allowing various scripts in NoScript, etc. (yes, including facebook.net) but the crashes are so frequent as to make Firefox unreliable. And if I turn NoScript off, suddenly no more crashes at all. NoScript is definitely the driving problem behind the crashes.

Can you help?

Not seeing any crashing on soundcloud, not with all scripts blocked, not after Allowing soundcloud.com, not after also Allowing sndcdn.com. And at that point, I'm able to play media on Soundcloud no problem. Still no crashing.

Please try Standard Diagnostic (leaving NoScript enabled) and let us know the results, thanks.

After a bit more testing, I realized I need to mention an additional detail:

I just discovered this does not occur in standard desktop Firefox 55.0.3, but it occurs 100% in Portable Firefox (which is what I'm testing in). Could you take a look in Portable Firefox?

Also, I note that when there are no legacy (non-webextension) add-ons installed, then the tab will just crash but the browser remains running. But when NoScript is installed (since it's a legacy add-on, not a webextension), then the entire browser crashes.

So,
1. If you're willing, what do you see happening re: this scenario in Portable Firefox on your system? Please visit that SoundCloud link, start audio playback, and click back and forth a few times. It crashes the tab (NoScript not running) or the entire browser (NoScript running) 100% of the time for me in Portable Firefox.
2. Is NoScript planned as a webextension? If not, what is your recommendation for the future?

1) I can't, because I don't use Windows, but hopefully someone else will.

2) Yes. See https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2017/08 ... ions-apis/

EDIT

Wait, so if you don't install NoScript at all, but install any other legacy addon, you get exactly the same crashing?

That is not a NoScript issue.

I suggest you ask Firefox Portable's support for help, or have you already asked them? - https://portableapps.com/node/56710
