[RESOLVED] Slashdot Moderation with NoScript
[RESOLVED] Slashdot Moderation with NoScript
In regards to Firefox 52.0.2 w/NoScript 5.0.2, my problem is with slashdot.org - specifically being able to moderate posts. The dropdown menu for moderation shows my choice, but it doesn't go through. I don't know what I have to allow. The only experimenting that has worked is allowing everything, which defeats my purpose in using NoScript.

Re: Slashdot Moderation with NoScript
Do you mean Allow Scripts Globally, or Allowing every script source on the page?kmberry wrote:The only experimenting that has worked is allowing everything,
Can you please post here the entire script listing on that page?
With 'everything' allowed in that page, please right-click the NoScript Options menu item. Nothing will seem to have happened, but it copied the script listing to clipboard, you can use Ctrl-V to paste it.

Re: Slashdot Moderation with NoScript
Hi barbaz, I mean Allowing every script source on the page. I only have to allow slashdot.org in order to read the page. Trying to post the list activated this forum's antispam filter.

Please PM it to me and I'll try to post it for you. PMs to forum staff are not spam-filtered.kmberry wrote:Trying to post the list activated this forum's antispam filter.

Thanks.
Is that the fewest sites required for it to work? Also, more specifically, is google-analytics required?

Re: Slashdot Moderation with NoScript
I just allowed google-analytics to see if it would record my moderation, and it did not. The site is perfectly viewable with only slashdot.org allowed, but needs something else allowed for engagement.

Can you please find the minimum required permissions and then repost/PM me the script listing with just those permissions? Thanks!

Re: Slashdot Moderation with NoScript
I don't know how to find minimum required permissions, not sure what that means.

Re: Slashdot Moderation with NoScript
By trial and error, I found that fsdn.com was what had to be allowed in order to engage. However, that left me with an unwanted sponsored ad which I don't know how to block via element hiding, as I don't know how to write filters. This is what I found within the sponsored ad. I realize that's not the main purpose of NoScript, but it actually is the unbearable ads that led me to use it.

I think you figured that out in your next postkmberry wrote:I don't know how to find minimum required permissions, not sure what that means.
Thank you for letting us know!kmberry wrote:By trial and error, I found that fsdn.com was what had to be allowed in order to engage.
I did a search for "fsdn.com", and this was the first result that came up - https://slashdot.org/faq/tech.shtml
So I would say Allowing fsdn is the actual solution here.
NoScript is not an ad blocker at all actually. In terms of ad blocking, you would do better with an actual content filtering addon, such as uBlock Origin.kmberry wrote:However, that left me with an unwanted sponsored ad which I don't know how to block via element hiding, as I don't know how to write filters. Re: Slashdot Moderation with NoScript
One more thing to add, which is an ad solution due to your mention of uBlock Origin. I have been using and would still be using SeaMonkey rather than Firefox, but LastPass (password extension) has been exploited and that has not been fixed in SeaMonkey. uBlock Origin causes SeaMonkey to crash repeatedly. And I normally use AdBlock Plus for blocking ads.
In Firefox, I replaced AdBlock Plus with uBlock Origin, and subscribed to the SAME filter lists - Easy List & Easy Privacy, and removed the other subscriptions included by default. uBlock Origin removed the offending ad on slashdot, which appeared when I allowed in NoScript that fsdn script. I don't understand this at all, since it is the same subscription; however, I found the blocking filter - slashdot.org##article[class*="sponsored"] - which is an Element Hiding rule - and put it in AdBlock Plus which I can use in SeaMonkey without crashing it.
Peace has been restored
